Sister Alvear, are you serious????? You're going to use a credit card, run up a bill, pay a usury fee (interest), and somehow in this you're going to get the victory over the devil??? Maybe this is the logic so many people use when they buy thousands of dollars worth of clothing on credit to go to a Conference.
You know, I think the simple point here is that Sis. A is not going to let her broken stove get the best of her......

You apparently do not know how important a stove/oven is to a woman. Satan can use anything to discourage you - - this just happened to be her stove.

Never said anything about the devil giving up on America.

What experience in other countries do you have to back up your moronic statement that America is "EVERY BIT" as difficult as any where else in the world?

You want to make bold idiotic statements about things you know nothing about and then don't like to be called on it.

So tell us...what countries have you been to? Back up your boast.

This discussion is worse than the Republicans and Democrats arguing over the debt limit!

You are exactly right!

A bit Pharisaical to me.

Envious? What's the point? So they can afford to take a few flights here and there.

This is beginning to sound a bit more like class warfare than the unwarranted malicious criticism of a lady who devoted her entire life to the people of Brazil

My point is this. The Alvears are not alone in suffering for the cause of Christ. Now, some folks will take umbrage with the fact that an American could possibly suffer in ways that are comparatively, equal to, or worse than, the hardships many missionaries endure, but I assure you it is not only possible, but common.

I suppose my personal experiences have jaded me a bit. I readily admit a bias toward the North American church because it is suffering, and in danger of extinction. American pastors are facing things most missionaries will never deal with.

Lastly, it's the attitude of the poster in question that I struggle with, and not the need. I cannot stand an attitude of entitlement. It reeks of pride.
Entitlement? Sis Alvear is not on the welfare dole. She is working her butt off for Jesus and the people of Brazil. You act as though she is getting rich doing it and it's your money somehow

Re: Well...guess I should go buy a stove...

Charnock if your big deal is "what about the people here in America living in poverty", then why lay into Sis Alvear? She did not say not to help them. She did not cause their poverty. No missionary did that to them. Why not argue we should help both instead of criticizing this woman?

Hysteria rules.

When an American pastor speaks of hardships and need you tell them to quit crying and get out. When a foreign missionary does the same thing, you weep and cry for them.

Hyperbole.

Where did I "lay into" Sister Alvear?

It is impossible to discuss issues because no one is able to get past personalities.

Your premise is that only someone from a third world country can experience hardship and financial difficulty. That premise is ignorant, at best.

Have you ever started a church? If so, how long did you pastor, and is it still alive? Have you ever been a lead pastor?
