Re: Pulpit Bloopers.

Bro Urshan once told spoke about a young preacher he knew who referred to Cornelius "that great musician, the leader of the Italian band" (Acts 10:1)

Re: Pulpit Bloopers.

When I was a teenager my pastor was explaining to us those little thingys the jews wear on their foreheads with scripture in them. They are called Phylacteries.

But... unfortunately the term being used was no Phylacteries... it was prophylactics.

Somehow... no one cracked a smile during the sermon. Afterward one of the saints explained the erroneous terminology.

When the pastor fell to the floor laughing so hard we all knew the cat was out of the bag and everyone just busted out laughing.

Re: Pulpit Bloopers.

One pastor I had was making announcements and one of the announcements was a shower the ladies were throwing for one of the sisters who was going to get married.

He said that the shower was for the ladies.

He concluded his thought by telling the men "Now brethren don't be coming up here showering with the ladies" lol

Re: Pulpit Bloopers.

I know a pastor who (in his pre pastor days) was pulled over one day because he and his vehicle matched the description of someone who had flashed a convenience store clerk.

When the convenience store clerk saw him they said this was the wrong guy and he was let go.

But... that night... a visitor preacher was preaching and he was talking about how we need to get out there make ourselves known to the world.

He kept exclaiming "You've gotta EXPOSE yourself"

Those who knew what had happened that day kept laughing and the preacher was none too happy about it. They had to explain later on what had happened.

Re: Pulpit Bloopers.

This wasn't from the pulpit, it was in a class room of about a dozen teenagers. Also, it happened 30 years ago when Mayberry RFD was still a tv show remembered by lots of folks.

I was teaching the class and I started talking about Hosea. I intended to show some things from the book by that name about God's love for Israel as shown in the story of Hosea and his unfaithful wife. Also about the restoration of that unfaithful wife as a picture of God's pursuing us and restoring us and as a picture of Israel's future restoration.

I mentioned that Hosea married a woman named Gomer. After I said her name, some one questioned (not addressed to me but like he was pondering it) "Gomer?" Then another voice spoke out "Gomer???". Then someone said, "Well, Gollllly" in a Gomer Pyle voice. Then some one else said "Shazam!" and that basically was the end of my teaching effectivity that day.

Point of order, Mr. Chairman. I have to take exception with the inaccuracies and fallibility of this post. Gomer Pyle, played by Jim Nabors was NEVER on the TV Show "Mayberry RFD". He appeared only on THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW, and latter went on to his own series "Gomer Pyle USMC". His character on the AGS was replaced by Gomers cousin , Goober, played by George Lindsay. As a side note, Goobers last name was not Pyle, as many "novice" fans of the show mistakenly believe. He was, in at least one episode, named "Goober Beasley". (Script continuity was never a high priority on the show.) Mayberry RFD, IMO, was a poor attempt to continue the legacy of the original show.

Andy Griffith, who played Andy Taylor, Sheriff and Justice of the Peace of the town of Mayberry, intended to become a minister, but chose acting as a career instead. Mayberry is a fictitous town loosely based on Mt. Airy, NC, the hometown of Andy Griffith.

And those are the facts with my right hand up. So, in reference to Bro. Sams mistake, and in the immortal words of our own Deputy Barney Fife: "Nip it! Nip in the bud!"

FINALLY! Someone who can rival my cousin Angie in Mayberry Trivia! She brought the game to my house once and "ran the board" on us THREE TIMES! LOL The one GOOD thing is that she stopped watching when it colorized and since she NEVER like Helen Crump (thought she was stuck up) I got those answers!
