Re: More Employee Layoffs at PPH

At the risk of sounding biased, let me just point out that this may just be in keep ing with the times and technology. With the amount of people who handle such things online, the need for call center and order fulfillment type work may be legitimately diminished. I do feel bad for the families affected and sincerely pray that they all find even better jobs, but the fact remains that these types of positions are not what they used to be.

As to the issue of trips and gas cards, I don't claim to know enough about the inner workings, but I do know that there is a tremendous amount of travel that certain "higher ups" must do that most other employees do not.

Looks like that is what they are doing. Less overhead to send the work out, therefore saving money.

Looks like some here feel the people are entitled to work there because they are Christians?

Re: More Employee Layoffs at PPH

I feel bad for the families, and I pray the Lord will get them back on their feet quickly. But lets face it.... it's a recession.

Both for-profit, and not-for-profit organizations are feeling the pinch, and are making cutbacks.

Some of the issues at PPH may be caused by mismanagement at headquarters, but it may just be the economic slowdown. When money is tight, less people are going to be buying books, tapes, etc. One church I know is recycing/re-using their Sunday School books from past years to use for their current SS classes. Eventually this kinda stuff ends up tricking down financially to PPH in St Louis.

Nope, won't go that far.

The PPH should be downsized if they are not pulling their weight. Since many call centers are overseas, it would be a great idea to set up a call center in a country where is a upci presence. It's a great cost cutting measure without much sacrifice if any in quality. In my experiences, a very small number of people can tell if a call is outsourced or not.

Where are they outsourcing to, India, Ireland?

Seems like a bad move to save only $80k. Seems like there are prob other areas that could be cut before they do that. Gas cards would be a good place to start.

Yeah. This would not be the first place to downsize call centering and order processing personnel as a direct result of the change in the nature of how items are ordered. There are probably very few publishing houses in the country with the same type of staff sitting around and waiting on phone-in orders as they had 20 years ago.

Re: More Employee Layoffs at PPH

A cap on gas cards may be more feasible.

$80 grand savings is $80 grand. A business is not in business to keep people employed.

On another note, how many of those positions were part time or filled by Gateway college students? In any case a job such as a call center is best outscourced.
