More likely, it's just that people don't want to offend you. Just say, "Call me 'Brad'" and set them at ease.

It's an older tradition in the UPC to call most everyone "Brother ____".

It's also a tradition of your typical lodge. "I now yield the floor to Brother Kramden.)

Every Apostolic church I've attended does this, not just UPCI.

Understandable, since that's what we are...brothers and sisters in Christ. I don't know why anyone would get upset at being called brother or sister...unless you aren't.

It's not getting upset that is the issue. Who cares? It's just a tradition that seems to have been made insistent on everyone. From the amount of ink such an issue gets within traditional circles, you would think it was a serious issue in the early church. The New Testament saints were not called this by a long shot, only rarely on occasion in the writings.

I prefer to be called by my first name only. I don't like to be called sister. That's just my personal preference.

Re: Title Usage In The UPC: Brother & Sister So an

I never could get used to the brother/sister thing. To me, it was just a way of excluding or including people. I did do it when I was in the UPC, but I never liked it. My husband and I just recently started calling people we used to know in the UPC by their first names when we talk to each other. Well....that's who they ARE!!
