Re: secular music being used in church services.
Should be okay, but I wouldn't use that as a drawing card...
When our church was legalistic, I'd used to rebel and play Piano Man in a slower tempo as filler music. Most of the church didn't recognize the tune. There are some secular songs which make excellent worship songs.

We used to play and sing "Lean On Me".
Haven't done it in years.

For goodness sake don't ever listen to a song like this cause it will lead you astray.

Re: secular music being used in church services.
I once heard "Long Black Train" in a church; not during the service, but before the service started. I have no problem with that. I would be very particular about what kind of music I allowed in church. I wouldn't want something like "Friends in Low Places."
A lot of classical music was written to be sort of a prelude (there is a better word but I can't think of it now) to the service.

I heard that in church also.....
kinda off track here.....
...but how do you all here feel about "secular" songs turned Christian... For example, there are many songs out there that were wordly songs to begin with but someone changed the lyrics to make it Christian.... Unless you knew the other version, you would never know.... Like "Because You Loved Me"... Celine Dion.... The first time I heard that song, I told my hubby that it reminded me of God.... It wasn't no time after that I heard The Williams Brothers sing their version of it but in a Christian way.... Now I could be wrong, it could have been the other way around.... Christian first and then make secular..... Hmm.....
I've heard many rant and rave over such things but then they cry and weep over songs they like that were once secular but now have Christian themes....

Amazing Grace was not written to an original tune, and I consider it the greatest gospel song of all time.
"He Looked Beyond My Faults" was written to the tune of "Danny Boy," and before that it was "Londonderry Aire."
"Leaving On My Mind" was originally "Linda On My Mind."
"Meeting In The Air" was originally a circus tune; I don't know then name or any of the words.

Yes, I know... I heard "He looked Beyone my Faults" for years and always felt God... and then I heard Danny Boy and I laughed soo hard.... mostly because I've heard many preach against taking things of the world and praising God with it...and they were the ones singing it!... .. Now, as far as "Meeting in the Air" I can actually here that as a circus tune! lol!
Some songs weren't so innocent.... I will never forget moving to a new city and attending a new church and they were singing, "I think I'm gonna praise Jesus All Night Long" well,,,,,, All Night Long was not a Christian song by no means and I about fell over laughing..... others didn't think I was sooo funny.... but you had people dancing, shouting and running....

Oh my goodness, it is kind of funny you would mention "Friends In Low Places."
When my youngest was real little, she sang a lot. She got a microphone once after services were over and started singing that song. It was not in a Pentecostal church, but still........ Most just laughed though. And they learned to turn off the sound system when services were over.
