Cat #3 was spayed but still has cat friends. We've always allowed our cats outdoor privileges. Spencer has "cat" friends that come to our deck in back or porch in front. There are two cats that visit...gender unknown

I think I'd rather deal with having to eliminate mice. At least I can catch them in traps... Don't think I could deal with the skunk problem.
Ron was right...it wasn't that small of a mouse that made that big of a thud.
We bought these stoopid little no-contact mousetraps. It's like a little mouse hotel, they go in, but never come out. After seeing that 'mouse' last night, I now realize why we've never caught one in them, but the outsides have been CHEWED! They are too big to get in!
I feel compelled to breakdown this post. With all the talk about how we DEFINE AFF, analyzing one of the key supporters is of critical importance.

The average mouse maybe weighs 4-6 ozs...how does that little bit-o stuff create a HUGE THUD. What is the MRS really hearing or wanting us to believe she heard?
It was a mouse that had fallen from the floor above onto about the third or fourth step of the stairs.
FALLEN? FALLEN? she will later go on to implicate the cat in the crime involving a little rodent locked in a battle for its life being launched from the stairway precipise by ?..... Why is the MRS covering for CAT in this unprovoked act of violence?
REALLY?!?
Yes, really!
Why is the MRS having a conversation with herself using typed dialogue? Who is she speaking to?....the Cat? her doggie? her other self?
It must have been a bit stunned because it didn't know what to do, or where to go, giving me enough time to grab the cat near me and sic it on the mouse. Of course my dog was scaring the cat so he didn't even pay attention to the dark little blur and a hilarious chase ensued.
So...we now learn that MRS may actually be involved at the top of this mouse tormenting food chain, the director of this scene....and the CAT is her patsy.
Stoopid cat keeps bringing them inside to 'play' with before he eats them. Unfortunately, some get away while he's batting them around. Ggggrrrr!
So, is the MRS really an anti-cat kooky eccentric that is out to make a CAT the fall-guy whenever strange sounds occur....in her mind?
Is the MRS actually inviting unsuspecting MICE onto her stairway by telling them she has leftover cheese she can't finish?
Are all the problems with AFF actually just a smoke screen to cover up the MRS' sinister cat-n-mouse games?
Mrs, is your cat declawed? Mine is front declawed. He will lick the mice and may sit on-and due to size almost suffocate-them, but I've never found evidence that he's killed one.
That is a pretty big 'mouse'... But your husband's traps may be too big. If they don't do the trick, I've heard that if you get a five gallon bucket, put a brick small side up in the center, water all around up to the top of the brick, peanut butter on the brick, they'll climb in and can't get out. I don't know what to do if you catch one this way though... Unless you turn it lose outside for cat training...

Human perspective: Mice are really that dumb. That's why they run around in mouse mazes all day and don't boycott scientists, right?
Mouse perspective: I got where I was going and I'm still alive right? Let's see you jump off a ledge at least 18x your height and keep running! Fit, that's what I am!

You have some pretty big mice!!! Are you sure that isn't rat size??
The average mouse weighs 35-42 grams....that's about 1 1/2 - 2 oz.
You must feed yours well!
That being the case, it really makes me wonder how something so light can make such a huge noise. I mean, just how sensitive are those ears of hers anyway???

No Mary, he isn't declawed. He's an inside/outside cat. Spends most of his time outside. That's why I have mice IN my house...he catches them OUTSIDE and brings them INSIDE to eat. Well, at least that's what he USUALLY does. AFTER he plays with them. But sometimes they get away from him...apparently!
I'm pretty sure it's one of those field mice. They have huge ears, and are just a tad bigger than regular ole house mice. Hence the *thud*
And to explain the *thud* a bit...they are newly built stairs, so it's just the hard wood step...no soft carpet to land on...too bad little mousey!
One time we DID find a dead rat in my son's closet...so I KNOW how big a rat actually is! Unless of course it was a baby neutria. I wasn't gonna inspect it!

The Mrs,
Our cat is a total outside cat and we don't have mice inside. The difference may be that ours is not quite tame. You think that makes a difference? She will let me pet her while she's eating, but she won't let me touch her otherwise. The other cat that is hanging around won't let me touch it.
Anyway, peanut butter on a mouse trap is the best. They can't grab that and get away.
We used to live in a house that was surrounded by maze and corn fields. Once when we came home from being out of town a HUGE hole had been chewed by the back door allowing the rat's entrance. We didn't know where that rat could be!!! My husband bent a tin can and nailed it in place because we were so tired. He didn't want to repair the hole that late at night. We put out some poison and it ended up dying under the bath tub!!! We were getting ready to move to our new home and I'm so glad for that - nasty!!!!
