You mean people on this board, or people in general?

The premise of Facebook is that you use your real name. Unlike the way MySpace started, it's the real name thing that makes it work. And unlike Myspace - by default, people that aren't your friend can't see hardly any of your personal details.

It's a good system, because people can usually just see enough about you to know whether they know your or not, then if (and only if) you approve them as a friend, they can see more. I always advise women to use "First Maiden Last" name configuration (if married, obviously) because it makes it easier for old friends to reach out and find you.

There are some caveats. If you join a Network, sometimes that opens up your profile a bit more. For instance, when you sign up, you will likely be asked what city you are in -- then you are encouraged to become part of that network. It's not bad to do that, but you will want to adjust your privacy settings to limit viewing by people your don't know.

I will try to find some links to tips on how to configure your privacy settings. But, by default, you are pretty safe (unless things have changed since I signed up).

It really is cool. I just found a childhood friend that moved away from my neighborhood when we were both 7 years old. Hadn't seen or spoken to her since that time. Plus, I have reconnected with tons of people I never expected to see again. I dig it.

Re: Facebook Newbie

Most people I know would know me by my user name. If the privacy settings work the way that the link seems to show, I might be able to work it out. There are a handful of people that I don't want running "searches" and discovering my use of FB. Some of my "friends" have run searches of people on FB and hurt them by twisting what they found.

That's why I won't use my real name anywhere on the net, other than one personal e-mail account.

Here's my profile page. I shortened the url so my name doesn't show up in the link:

Mary,
Settings is next to your User Name.
When you hit that with your mouse a menu will drop down.
Select Privacy Settings
Select Profile Information - Here you can choose "Only Friends" or "Only Me" for the various options. I have both (Only Friends and Only Me) selected for the various options in this area.

Also under Privacy Settings, you can select "Block List". Type in anyone's name that you don't want to ever be in your life on Facebook.
