Re: Beards?

I currently have a goatee. I had a mustache all the way from Jr. High through High School. I have had a full beard. When I came into the "Apostolic" movement in 1982, I shaved and did not wear facial hair until I left the UPC in December 1999. I do shave if I am going to preach in the UPC (which I did three times last month) even if I am not asked to. I always grow it back and love a goatee. My wife loves the goatee but prefers a full beard. Sad that is is all Grey now! :-(

Re: Beards?

Grew one for about six months last year and loved it. Should not have shaved it but did for a visit back to the UPC of USA. Not an issue in Guatemala.

Re: Beards?

It was not an issue with the Black UPC brothers or the Hispanics! They just want a little tighter control with the white preachers - to balance out the women and the hair issue. I wonder why they are so fixated on HAIR of any kind? Isn't that weird or creepy to you?

And what WOULD happen if some guy sprinkled hair clipping from his electric shaver on someone in order for them to be healed?

Re: Beards?

Hey, when the host of a party wants folks to dress in a uniform, its not polite to show up in 'plain' clothes.

So, when uniforms are require to participate in the party (religious uniforms verses spiritual unity), I simply decline the invitation. In that way, I can continue to exercise my liberty with a clear conscience, and the others are free to continue on in their traditions. (Romans 12:18)

Re: Beards?

One morning about two weeks ago I shaved my gotee and stache that I had worn for about 5 years.

I don't know why it's such a big deal in the UPC. Most people in my church and folks i work with did not even notice the difference.

Re: Beards?

Hmmm One additional thought.

With all of the facial hair finally being exposed here, it is no wonder that AFF is getting a reputation for having a 'rebellious', non apostolic attitude! Yet, I would that our detractors were as zealous for the doctrines of Jesus Christ, as they seem to be for their own organizational rules.

Re: Beards?

I do miss old Steve Epley around here. Anytime beards were a subject of discussion Steve Epley would come running in with his protest of facial hair.

He knew he had no scripture to stand on but would still holler that no man could go to heaven from HIS church with a beard.

Re: Beards?

Another thought. I have also been accepted by a good number of UPCI preachers over the years. Of course, I was actually preached out of one church - yes, from the pulpit. But, another preacher married my wife and I, and I was even employed for a while by the UPCI in one of their ministries. So, in all fairness, like so many organizations, it really is a mixed bag.

Steve and I have crossed posts before. But, the foundational problem always remained the same, as it has remained for so many others, i.e., it was always 'his church', and he got to set the rules.

But he is not here to speak for himself.
