Or you can even go with a picture. A picture that you really love, use the colors in it as your color scheme.
Something will need to be the main focal point, with everything else building off of that. In a bedroom, it usually is the bedding, or a large picture.
For me it was the color of my walls. I knew what color I wanted them to be, so everything else had to accommodate that. Since I wanted a deep color, I went with the white bedspread so that the room didn't look dark. And then use accent pillows for the pop of color. And white picture frames on the walls.
From the colors in your closet, it sounds like you might like khaki colored walls with a deep red comforter as your starting point, with black accents. Do you like khaki (there are many paint shades along that line) walls?

Re: Calling Those with a Knack for Decorating...
It just seems that bedding is the most difficult to find - so once you get "colors" in your mind that you like, then look for the bedding and build around it.
My decorating colors are completely different than what are in my closet.
AQP - - I love purple too! My other home had a purple dining room - - loved it. Now, my living area has touches of purple - such a rich color!

Re: Calling Those with a Knack for Decorating...
What colors make you feel happy and contented?
I'm not a pastel kind of person, I like rich colors. When I look at the walls of my bedroom and bathroom, I just feel all contented and happy inside.
I have that sand color that is so popular right now in my living room, but I plan to change it. That color doesn't make me feel happy at all. It makes me feel bleh. I'm not a pastel or neutral colors kind of person, so I've gone with very colorful, very bright in my home. But some people love shades of white, neutrals, pastels.....whatever. Think about what colors really float your boat.

Re: Calling Those with a Knack for Decorating...
Well...I could send a crew over there...they SURPRIZED me once by painting my bedroom a lime green, bright yellow and orange and drew flowers all over one of the wall...lol...in time I covered the flowers up...They thought it was Beautiful...and I live in their world so it is really something else!
Oh well they know I like Jewish things and hired a painter to paint a lion with all the works in my dining room...Just ask Sherri....
I have quit saying what I like...ha...
Now for down to earth I too like the southern living ideas...
Love you my friend!

HGTV has some good images to view. I really like this link. Look on the left where it says, in red, "Bedroom photos by style". Click on your choice and peruse the images. Look further down and you can view images by color, "Bedroom photos by color".

Re: Calling Those with a Knack for Decorating...
I agree with Renda on finding the bedding first and building around it. It took quite a while for me to find one I liked AND was good quality. I went thru a couple sets when I fell in love with it at the store, but then got it home and out of the bag and discovered the quality wouldn't hold up.
