Don't know what the practice is other places.
Here we tip 20 percent rounded up to the next dollar or $5.00 minimum.
Waiter/waitress work is hard and the pay is poor. Really, the only money they make is from the tips. And if anything does not please the customer about the parking lot, the restaurant decor, the way the food is prepared, how long it takes for the food to arrive, and other things beyond the server's control, the server gets blamed and does not get a tip.
Church people known for being notoriously poor tippers, very demanding, overly critical and usually offensive and rude to the waiters. What a reproach to the name of Jesus.

That is worthy of its own thread. I remember us apostolics going to eat after most services (about the only thing were allowed to do). We put those poor waitresses through Hades. I think they made a couple of bucks if that.
OK, I decided to go to Five Guys. The first half of the burger was excellent but the second half was way too much. At least I didn't get any fries since the SMALL consists of about 4 large potatoes.
Today my wife and I were out and on the way home we stopped at Pearl's Diner in Hamilton, OH. I had a bowl of pinto beans with some chopped onion in them, plus home fries, two sausage patties, and cornbread. Pat had scrambled eggs, home fries, and goetta. The whole bill was $10.39 to which we added a $5.00 tip.
Tonight is our monthly FGBMFI dinner meeting.
Nice.
I used to wait tables (and made $1.60/hour plus tips) and this kind of tipping was well appreciated. If I go out to eat, I make sure the waiter/ess is compensated properly.
