Because the more time I spend in the presence of Jesus the more I become aware of the corruption around me and the more I am persuaded to "lay aside every weight and sin".

I think the real issue is what people consider "Weight and sin".
Many legalists (not all) believe sin to be anything that violates "standards", but don't spend a lot of time on issues of the heart, such as bitterness, hatred, envy, gossip, backbiting, etc.
Many liberals (not all) realize that many of our man made standards have little, if anything, to do with sin, and focus more on actions rather than appearance.

Re: Why is it that...
Well some conservatives are very hard core on outward things.
And some liberals kind of flaunt their "liberties.".
But, I think the majority of both sides love God and try to live their convictions. They're are just not that interesting to talk about.
And attitude has a lot to do with it. If we don't have the attitude of Jesus, we are missing something important.

Your statement is half correct. Legalistic understand and want grace for themselves but don't give or understand it for others.

Legalists don't have to spend time on attitudes as long as they look the part.

Re: Why is it that...
A legalist believes it's okay to gossip as long as it's true and already public. The same person will say a person will split hell open if a person has a 3 person concept of God.

Hypocrites have no problem generalising and categorizing others according to the most awful characteristics imaginable, while complaining when others do the same about them.
