Re: Social drinking?

I agree that it is a slippery slope. Why even go there, when the outcome usually is so devastating? I don't condemn those who do, but pray that they realize what a dangerous slippery slope it can become.

Re: Social drinking?

I don't believe having an occasional drink is a sin.

But I do believe that if one chooses to imbibe occasionally, they should be careful to respect the convictions and weaknesses of other believers around them.

This right here. For me, moderation as to how much, where, what and with whom I drink in front of is strictly guarded. My choice is wine, at home limit to one glass with no food, two with a heavy meal. So as not to ruin a witness of perceived example of Christianity, I partake only in front of family. Generally I enjoy wine one or twice a month.

Re: Social drinking?

Wine seems to be the alcoholic drink of choice on AFF, but what's to say someone else feels the need to have a shot of Jack Daniels or a little Smirnoff?

Personal conviction, or church-wide standard?

Yes indeed. The problem with a drink or two, is that some people can drink one or two occasionally, and never need more. But, there are some who seem to be more predisposed to addiction than others, and you may not even know that you are one of them. It has already been said that most people who are alcoholics figured they could handle one or two, and never intended to become drunkards, but it was the eventual outcome of a drink or two.

For our family, we have decided to just stay away from it. The benefits, in our opinion, do not outweigh the dangers. There are more ways to have heart healthy lives without wine.

I stay away from beer and liqueur because of the association it has with my life before Christ. I want nothing to do with the taste and the drunkenness that it has to offer. Is drinking JD in moderation a sin to me - no
Plenty of bad memories associated- yes
Bad taste- absolutely
