Re: Home school?

We home schooled our three children.
Had to do it over again most defiantly would do so. They have turned out to be great scholars secularly and more important, Biblically.

All went to secular college and did exceptionally well and made Deans list and scholarships etc.

Not sure what questions you may have, but if done properly, it is the best choice one can do for their children. If not, it could be a disaster.

Re: Home school?

Do some children do well after being homeschooled because of it or in spite of it? Could they possibly have done better in public/private school but still turned out okay in home school?

Are children that do poorly after being homeschooled doing badly because of homeschool or would they have done worse in public school?

I don't think these questions can be answered. What I do believe is that involved parents are the key. Homeschool tends to attract more involved parents. It's easier to put kids on a bus and forget about them for 8 hours a day every day than to homeschool. Thus lazier less involved parents are weeded out of the homeschool movement. That alone may account for many statistics showing it generally is better than public school. However there is still no good way to compare involved parents of a child in public school to involved parents who homeschool.

1. Can you handle questions your child has about various subjects like math, English or do you have a support network for when these questions arise.

2. Does your child get enough social interaction with others his age?

3. Does he get exposed to other viewpoints or just yours?

And many other questions you should answer before you home school in my opinion. Compare your options to what public school offers and go from there. An involved parent for a public school child could be more beneficial than simply home schooling

Just my two cents.
I think homeschool is hard on math and science education. Many parents probably can't go past 5th grade in those subjects.

English and writing and history are all probably fine for most parents.

Technology and vocational learning may be a problem if your child isn't on the college path.

Re: Home school?

As others above have said, homeschooling depends almost entirely on the amount of effort the parents put into the education.

Here are a couple of good sources for curriculum bundles:

Re: Home school?

We use Rod and Staff, a mennonite created curriculum. Was only $300.00US for the whole year. It's fantastic.

I homeschooled my son starting in what would have been 6th grade. I believe it was one of the best decisions I ever made as a parent. Had to fight him tooth and nail to do things sometimes, but he was intellectually challenged, unlike the socialist public school system who only gave him one day of challenge per week in a gifted program. He was battling some spirits in public school, and in the New Orleans area in general, that were very difficult to deal with. Plus he had few friends. Choosing to relocate after Katrina was another one of the best decisions hubby and I made.

Today he credits much of who he is because he was made to read and memorize important scriptures in the Bible, we played games with Fallacy Detective, and he read and wrote a report on Foxes Book of Martyrs. Unlike many of his peers from church who were public schooled, he did not leave God or live a compromised life once he was old enough to move out.

Can't think of any cons unless you are in a situation where there is no support available.

1. If a parent doesn't know answers there are ways for them to find them. Co-ops are often filled with other children or other parents who can help a child with a subject a parent is weak in.

2. Children of all sorts of ages are in co-ops. It's also good for children to socialize with older children, as well as adults.

3. A parent can always teach a child about other viewpoints through a variety of resources.

Re: Home school?

We homeschool. We use Abeka & love it. Our kids are very social & bright. Our oldest daughter & our son graduated a year & a half early. They took the GED exam & scored very high. I'm very thankful we are able to homeschool.
