Definitely a difference.
As to whether one or the other or both are right or wrong... different issue, I think.

Funny thing. I have always been hesitant about seeking unemployment benefits because I looked at it as a form of welfare.
HOWEVER, there are people who decide to boost their education / trade skills while living off of unemployment. If I were to use unemployment benefits, this would seem like a wise way to invest my time.

Re: Job rant
I understand the technical difference between unemployment insurance and welfare. I also know that unemployment insurance is abused many times by folks who are not really looking for a job as well as used by those who genuinely need it.
I look at it as welfare because I have close relatives who during the recent recession relied on it through all of the extensions the government made because they couldn't find a job that paid enough (they had a Master's Degree). This man was on unemployment insurance for over a year when any day he could have taken a job not to his liking that would have paid as much while he looked for the perfect job. I think he learned his lesson though because later when he and his wife paid their dues by humbling themselves and doing menial work (delivering pizza's, waitering, and washing dishes for a caterer) God blessed him with the perfect job making almost double the money he had ever made previously. The funny thing is this guy is pretty conservative and on principle is against "handouts" but was caught up in it himself when he could just keep on getting it.
I also have memories as a teenager in the Deep South how abused it was. I remember going with a cousin in Louisiana to the unemployment office to turn in his weekly report of where he had tried to find work (yes this was a few decades before the internet) and the government employee behind the counter helped him make up places he had supposedly looked for work.
Again a good thing in many instances and no shame in taking it when honestly needed but anytime you can get income without working it is not good to be idle or get used to it.

Re: Job rant
We were recently on unemployment for about 3 weeks. Definitely does not pay the bills. But does help buy a few groceries and get gas for your vehicle. Thankfully the Lord has provided yet again another job for my hubby so we are getting everything back in order bill wise....sure doesn't take long to get all that out of whack
Houston, I will pray that God provides you with a better job than what you had and one that pays alot better too!! In the meantime if you need that unemployment....get it.

Houston,
I know in the middle of a stressful time it is hard to take the long view but I am praying that this short term suffering leads to a long term better employment situation for you. Hang in there!

Re: Job rant
I applied at some companies. I received a response today from a strike/crisis security company. However, I don't have the $ necessary to hold until the first pay period. So that is out of the ?
I have an app in at a company that recently hired my former supervisor. So that is a plus.

Re: Job rant
I haven't worked in 2 weeks. What a blow. I received an email from my credit union stating that this months loan (car payment) is going to be skipped. Every July (summer vacation) and December (Christmas shopping) the credit union offers what they call Skip-A-Pay. It's automatically applied to accounts unless opted out. This allows people to use what would have been a loan payment for other things like vacation or Christmas shopping. Oh, yeah... so, this month they are offering Skip-A-Pay for those affected by the hurricane. Though not affected, this has relieved some of the pressure I have been under stressing over bills-bills-bills.
What is it called when your company won't lay you off or terminate you, but has you in limbo so that you don't collect unemployment?

I'm hoping this leads to a better job, as CC1 mentioned. It may have. What's it called when you know someone in the company that may put it a good word for you?

Re: Job rant
I have a job interview on Monday for to be part of an emergency response team. This is at the company where my former supervisor obtained employment. The pay is $5 more per hour. The position may require travel to East Texas, Conroe, Kingwood, or other areas affected by the hurricane. When the position is no longer needed the company will find a place to put those that were hired to be on the ERT. Pay will probably be lowered. But, this company usually pays a higher hourly rate than the mom/pop security companies.

Houston, I am praying that this job interview Monday goes well and you get hired. Keep us posted!
