Re: pictures

Thought you would like to know a little more about where we feed many children...these areas are called FAVELAS in Brazil...

There is no single narrative to describe life inside a Brazilian favela. The
stories are as diverse as the backgrounds that make up the estimated
population 11.4 million individuals that live in favelas! That means that
there are more people living in favelas than the population of Portugal.,
(10.6 million). In Rio de Janeiro alone 1.4 million people are living in favelas.
They wear the uniform of the unfortunate.
A lot of houses (shanties) don’t have running water. The lights can go out
for days. The streets of favelas are usually unpaved, and when it rains the
gutters fill with mud, trash and human waste. Without medical facilities and unemployment benefits, disease and societal problems are a constant
problem.
Violence is normal so you never know what to expect. The road or so-called roads may be blocked by uprisings of all kinds. You learn patience
and longsuffering.
See nothing and say nothing. It’s how you stay alive. Any visit to a favela
could be dangerous. Personally, I never ask any questions I just try to be
their friend and tell them the story of Jesus. I am not there to know who are the drug lords, who sleeps with who, who has a gun, or even who molests the children. It has taken years to prove that to them. Today they trust us and know that we are there to help them and love them.
After a while, you begin to see an unequal world through their eyes.
In the favela children up to 15 years old stay out as late as they want. They mess around with prostitutes and listen to their adventures. There are those who work
and those who just drift. I never know who I will see…they are constantly on the move. Some of the reasons for this is that they are bullied by gangs, threatened by drug wars, and scrambling just to make a living.
The daze of hunger is worse than that of alcohol. The daze of alcohol makes us sing they say but the one of hunger makes us shake.

The road from Maceio, the capital of Alagoas state, to its airport passes luxury-car showrooms and shops selling outside Jacuzzis. In the central reservation, indigent families live under plastic sheeting. Even by the standards of Brazil's northeast, Alagoas
(The state we live in) is scarred by poverty and extreme inequality. With 107 murders per 100,000 people, Maceio is also the most violent state capital in Brazil with 60 murders per 100,000, Alagoas is the country's most violent state It is a place of sugar and cattle, where the sugarcane cutters settle scores with fists and knives and the well-connected escape punishment by using contract killers instead.
