Why does anybody, unless they have quite a few kids or extended family or for business reasons, need over 2000 square feet??

Its funny..."as a Yankee":sshhh, I always think of canada as being lots and lots and lots of land. I'm guessing you and TB aren't hanging out in the Yukon, Northwest, or Nunavut!
It seems strange that in a country with a government willing to give an entire province back to the native occupants, that land is still a premium.

just wondering....utility costs for your home and apartment? what fuel do you heat with?

I could see ministers who entertain overnight guests frequently needing additional square feet for a guest room, another bathroom, etc. Or do people just get hotel rooms these days?

That would be included in "business reasons". I think there are a lot of hotel stays nowadays though.

We have 3200 sq ft. I do have a small office for business, and am feverishly concocting ways to convince my wife to have more children.

One of those Yankee boys, huh? LOL.
Canada does have LOTS of land. It's a huge country which you would know I'm sure. It's nice to meet a Yankee who actually knows something about the neighboring country - just across the border. Hehe. J/K! 
We heat here with natural gas and probably over the course of the year our heating costs run about $3000 total for the whole house and $60/month for electric but 1/3 of that is shared by the tenants downstairs. We don't pay it all.
We're able to shut the kitchen/family room area where we spend most of the time off from the rest of the house and given the fact that the climate is fairly temperate here in winter and the fact that heat rises from downstairs and helps to keep this area warm, it helps.
I love our gas fireplace but came to realize it burns a lot of fuel so have cut back somewhat on the use of that.
Governments get some strange ideas sometimes, eh?
