My daughters both have very long, thick hair... and they love the look of the curls they get from hotsticks- BUT I know they are damaging their hair... because of the amount of hair that is coming out on the hotsticks when they remove them.

Go to a beauty supply and get some perm wrapping pappers...put them on the ends of the hair before you roll and the hair won't stick to the curlers...I have used hot sticks and found that they do pull out the hair...I also have hot rollers that seem to not do that, but they don't hold as much hair either...

I know. They had it circulating on here awhile back. It's hysterically funny and gross at the same time. One you don't want to see but can't quit looking at!!

I have long hair but it's baby fine and will NOT hold a roller of any type..it just falls out. Even Sponge curlers...I've never seen such, but I can roll it on anything, even pin it or clip it to my head and it will fall right out....

My hair hangs past my bum and is very thick. I use these rollers. I have 2 sets. If it's just a normal day I use 8 of the big ones. If it's something I want to be really curly for I use both sets and try to use all the rollers. I also spray a little hair gel (Herbal Essences) on the ends to help the curl set. If they do this they'll need to leave the rollers in for a while (45 mins. or so) for the curl to set. Also, if they'll wait a few minutes after taking the rollers out to do anything with their hair (let the hair cool) it will work better.

This isn't about rollers, but about a couple of great hair products I've found that I really like.

Our hairstylist suggested a product for my daughter to use before she uses the straightening iron. It protects the hair from the heat damage. I'm sure it would work the same for the hotsticks. It's called Pureology SuperSmooth Hot Iron Protection. You will probably only be able to find this at salons or beauty supplies.

And L'Oreal Studio Clean Gel. I use it like I would a mousse or gel to hold the curl in place, or just to 'scrunch' my hair. This does not leave that sticky, clumpy, wet-look feeling like so many gels and mousses do.

You can also just use single ply toilet paper to protect the hair when using the Hot Sticks.
