Well first of all. I don't talk with a twang, my name ain't bubba and I am not from the south...so the cast iron skillet is out...
As for the toothpick...how else are you supposed to know it is really done?

Cast iron skillets are sold all over the country, as for the rest of your babble.
Most cornbread takes about 20-25 minutes.

When you double your recipe you need to increase your pan size as well...that should solve your problem.

The pan size was already too big the first time so that was why I tried two

Seriously, why doesn't the toothpick thingy work for corn bread? It seemed to work for me.

yes brother the toothpick works. That's what I use.
It has been many years since I saw or used a straw broom.
I also do wash my iron skillet and then dry it on the stove top on a low setting. This prevents rust forming. I lightly grease the skillet with oil with a paper towel.

Actually I just go by the look of my cornbread to know when it's done. Sorry I just never used the toothpick. If it works for you just go ahead and do it that way. I think you can just heat the skillet on top of the stove, probably on a low setting for a little while.
