We can see the reflection of the sun bouncing off of objects in our line of sight when the sun itself is below our horizon. The moon and planets are extreme examples of this. High flying craft are terrestrial examples if they are high enough.

My paranoid guess is that this was a Chinese launch from a ballistic missile submarine timed to coincide with President Obama's visit to India. China considers India their "part of the world," so if we want to "meddle" there they will show us what it feels like to have a naval power right off of one's coasts.

We've been running naval and air vessels along China's coasts ever since the Chinese Civil War. Before that we were running our gunboats right up the rivers of China, along with just about every other country that had a gunboat to run.

I'm interested in why some of our military people are so certain that "no foreign vessels" were in the area. While this missile was being launched (or whatever) there were several panga boats preparing to make their runs onto the beaches around San Diego to drop off illegals and bales of drugs.

We have a pretty good "net" around us, but nothing is perfect. Lot's of things get through all the time. Perhaps this is a wake up call of the worst kind.
Except that the object, in order to make such an optical illusion, has to be headed towards the camera. That means the Sun is behind the object. I guess maybe though if it was a jetliner the sun could still be glinting off the aluminum belly. But that far away would it be that bright?

Re: Rocket or Missile?

Still weird that no official could not state absolutely it was a commercial jet. We have to assume some blogger nailed it.

Dunno. The camera lens always changes things. It just seems to me that if this wasn't a "regularly scheduled event" (aircraft, etc.) then it certainly wasn't a "covert" U.S. launch.

Whoever pushed this button wanted to be seen (barring a more reasonable explanation).

If anyone's bored in the coming days you can follow this flight online here and Prax said he's willing to run over to the coast and stand there for a few days with his camcorder.

There sure seems to be a lot more traffic going from Phoenix to Honolulu than I would have imagined.
