How about on the sidewalk in front of someone's house? Would you promote the behavior or cry for their free speech then?

They are there because of the funeral. They are disruptive to the funeral and to the funeral procession. They cause undue emotional distressed on already grieving persons.

Look, this situation hits close to home for me. I've seen this kind of hatred in the name of God in action.

Re: Westboro Baptist Church

BTW folks I find what these guys do is sick, just throwing out the freedom of speech for discussion.

I guess it boils done to you can have freedom of speech if good stuff is being said? If folks were gathering slogans of support then it wouldn't be a problem.

They have freedom of speech. They can say whatever they want in their church, on the streets, in front of Walmart... Why don't they go picket at a gay pride parade or picket homosexuals' funerals or AIDS clinics, if that's what they're really against? Why not go down to Mardi Gras or to the middle of Los Angeles?

Those aren't the places they go. They look for the funerals that are most likely to get media attention. They're capitalizing on others' grief and misfortune, and that's wrong.

They're not though. They look for the funerals that are most likely to get media attention. They're capitalizing on others' grief and misfortune, and that's wrong.
Is there a public street by church where funeral will be? I'm sure that's why they did the emergency law. In front of walmart and front of church where funderal will be is all public property.

All this just proves to me the constitution is taken subjectively depending on what a persons moral/political view is.

Indeed. While the church's actions are deplorable to most of society, they should be allowed to assemble peaceably wherever they are legally allowed to.

We protect our liberties by allowing them to others.

Some people are so afraid that their rights will be diminished that they freely relinquish both those rights and the principles behind them.

Let us remember that "if we suffer tamely a lawless attack upon our liberty, we encourage it, and involve others in our doom," it is a very serious consideration ... that millions yet unborn may be the miserable sharers of the event. ~Samuel Adams
Government should allow persons to engage in whatever conduct they want to, no matter how deviant or abnormal it may be, so long as (a) they know what they are doing, (b) they consent to it, and (c) no one -- at least no one other than the participants -- is harmed by it. ~Hugo Adam Bedau
