I don't think it's heartbreaking. I see starving children in the third world and think it's heartbreaking.
A boy wanting to join the Girl Scouts because he wasn't raised with any sense of an identity grounded in reality... I think it's just more stupidity from parents behaving badly.

First Peter Brady joins the Brownies (against his will) just to get back at Marsha for joining the Boy Scouts. Now a boy wants to join the girl scouts......

It is heartbreaking that his mother is imposing her stupidity onto her child.
