Jesus wants us to be friends.

14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. 15 Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth : but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you. John 15:14

When taking the whole counsel of God on one level we are to be friends with him in a loving relationship. On another level we are servants to do his will.

Note that all Christians are to be FRIENDS with Jesus.

Peace be to thee. Our friends salute thee. Greet the friends by name. 3 John 1:14

In the end time, that last generation of remnant Christians will be marked by their adherence to the commandments of Jesus.

12 Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus. Rev. 14:12

These will not be looking at Jesus commandments as legalism or bondage. They will realize they are the essence of him. They cannot be separated.
