Repealing the affirmation is a non-issue. The application that must be signed for reinstatement is much more demanding than the Affirmation.
In the wake of the charges of being too liberal from the ultra-cons, the remaining UPC preachers will be out to prove that they are "holiness preachers." At least for a while the UPC will hear more, not less, standards preaching.
The UPC still forbids preachers having televisions, it still requires uncut hair, denies the existence of women's pants, and preaches a salvation message that excludes 99% of Christians from Heaven.
Don't fall for the Tulsa Tea Party's claims that the UPC has become liberal - that's a smoke screen - I have no idea what's behind the smoke, but it's smoke I smell.
Will you join a UPC church if they repeal the affirmation? If you won't be rushing out to join the nearest location, why would preachers rush to rejoin an organization that has not changed in any significant way?
|
I agree that in the short term there will be more so called "holiness" preaching as the more conservative and even moderate preachers staying in the UPC move to calm fears of change, etc.
The changes I spoke of are several years off but perhaps not as long as I would have thought six months ago. I had thought the UPC was five years away from passing a Res 4 and was proved wrong.
Perhaps some of the young UPC evangelists / preachers I have spoken to who have claimed there is an underground of more liberal minded licensed preachers than is openly known is true. I always thought the guys telling me this were delusional! Perhaps that is why Res 4 passed.

Today's UPCI is not the same UPC I grew up with. I have a niece and nephew who are in their 20's and are heavily involved in their local UPC church.
Anyway, they were telling me about different movies they have gone to see lately! My sister, my sister, my sister told us about a movie she saw last weekend!!! She is the organ player!

Or, could it be, the ones who stand for something are leaving which can bring the influx of sin that will ensure the UPCI falls away to nothing more than a memory of righteousness and Godliness!
PM, it is all speculation. The statement above has just as much validity as yours which is not much! If you think for a minute that these men leaving will result in unity you are sadly mistaken. I know many men who are staying who will never embrace others that are also staying because there are too many differences for that to happen... TV or no.

Finally we agree on something! I would like to think that the stayers will come closer in unity, but the leavers might the best one for unity in their new org. Maybe. I hope I am wrong, but not convinced I am right. I would hope that the UPC would become more of a fellowship again and less of an members only society.
I do not think that the UPC as a whole is bad. I do think they do alot of good, but feel that they might be pulling people down with unneed yokes. But that is totally my opinion. I agree with you though it might be too far gone for the stayers to be united because of the length of the division.

I agree, PM...it is not the same, and I am older than you.
I remember the fellowship meetings and monthly youth rallies that everyone attended.
I was unsaved, but looked forward to those trips to the various churches.
The district meetings were held in the local churches instead of the camp ground and everyone attended.
Revials were two week events with Monday the only night off and everyone attended.
Friday night youth services were great and everyone attended.
We knew the pastors in the state because there was fellowship...not always agreement, yet there was fellowship.
Ahhhh, but that was yesterday...

What is the purpose of an organization if its members are unwilling to affirm their beliefs....
Unless it is an org of people who have none.....
Of course the AS will be turned over.......
Along with anything else pertinent to the uniqueness of Pentecost the UPCI once held.....

The new organization could be called the Corinthian Church. After all, Paul's gospel dealt with those same problems: " One says, I am of Paul, another says I am of Cephas, etc. " Good Post!
