This kind of stuff has always bothered me. I heard one girl say in Bible College that if she trimmed her hair at all, she might as well smoke dope. I know young people who have totally backslidden, because they wanted to go to ballgames and they thought if they were going to go there, they might as well get drunk, sleep around, etc. It's such a convoluted way of thinking! I guess they think if they're going to go to hell anyway, they might as well have a good time on the way. Sad!

I think what was missed in some places "back in the day" was the principles behind the "rules".

Exactly!! I wasn't raised with strict standards at all, but my parents did instill morals and principles, thank the Lord!

Great post Sherri, sometimes when I write this stuff people think I am pulling it out of thin air. I am glad you have recognized it and it bothers you as well.

I have been around and around and around enough to recognize an important disconnected principal when I see one.

...people accuse me of being rational...I mean backslidden...it doesn't bother me.

Yes. That kind of attitude persists today. Preaching and teaching has not delineated severities or what is the lesser or greater evil...as though going to a ball game is such a great evil.

But when you're told (as a young person) that wearing cufflinks will send you to hell, and that getting drunk will send you to hell, there is no difference in your mind. I can see where kids can get really messed up with this type of teaching.

Wasn't Queen Latifah in a movie along those lines? I think it was called, "Last Holiday".

Traditions Ol Paths...traditions..not commandments,,traditions CHANGE with time and culture.

Traditions are not a constant. CUSTOMS are NOT a constant.

If they are, then please, please, sell all that you have and lay it at the feet of the apostles so we can once again have all things common.

Hand over the keys of your town car to me OP..cause I have need this weekend of one of the things we alll hold common.....you know according to "our customs and traditions"

Principles are timeless; rules aren't. Unfortunately, many have tried to pretend that the rules are the principles, and tried to apply them as such, and it isn't working, hasn't been working, and isn't going to work in the future.

The only rules that ought to be concrete are the ones that come directly from the Word...oh wait...those rules should be the principles that determine all the other rules....hmmmm...did I say that right?

...another cup of coffee for me, I see....
