Several reasons, actually.
This is nothing new, for one. People have been talking about that possibility for decades now, and we really aren't any closer now than we were then. Just seems like it because of the media and internet that are commonplace now and news didn't travel fast back then as it does now.
For another, there aren't many nations that have all their ducks in a row themselves. And we think this planet can become one of universal monies, economy, education, and government? If it were to happen, it won't be while any of us are alive, and highly doubtful that our children will be either.
