Re: Observations at a Contemporary Baptist Church
My point is that we've codified it into meaning we have to speak the name of Jesus over a candidate. I can see that we baptize "in the name of Jesus Christ", "in the name of the Lord", or "in the name of the Lord Jesus", meaning in his authority according to his command. However, I'm curious as to where we read about a minister of the Gospel verbally speaking the name of Jesus like a formula over a candidate being baptized?

Yes, you'll get beaten up but no verses will be quoted to you (I'm sure you already know that). I hadn't discussed this issue for many years until I jumped on here last week, and it's just shocking to hear all this stuff again.

So Alex, my man, let me get a shade more specific so that you can be as well. Are you saying that a person who I baptized and said, "In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. In Jesus' name", that that person would be hell-bound unless this baptism were corrected?
It is a DIRECT quotation from the Bible....two of them, in fact.
Come on, Alex, put your thinking cap on.

What did John the Baptist say when he baptized Jesus?

That's the point. All the OT cleansings and preludes to water baptism didn't have a "formula" attached to them. Even Jewish Mikveh doesn't have a "formula" attached to it. From where do we base our establishment of "formula"?

Both are horrible as there is not an ETERNAL son, or sonship. The Son/Sonship had a beginning and will have an end.

I agree with earlier poster it is what is in the heart. We have fought over the saying and the exact wordings...but if the person being baptized is not doing it because they believe in their heart that Jesus is the Christ---God come in the flesh---then the baptism is useless, even done in the name of Jesus or Jesus Chirst.
Or even
1. FSG and J,
2. FSG, JC,
3. FSG, J even JC.
And I think that would exclude a lot of folks who are just doing it to obey or other motives than as an response of faith in Jesus being God.

Very well said! You know, I hate to admit this, but you just made me think of something that's never crossed my mind. Acts 2:38 says, "In the name of Jesus Christ" but almost all...maybe all....of the "oneness" baptisms I've witness have been some form of "I baptize you in the name of Jesus", omitting his standing as The Christ and technically violating the verse?
How come there isn't a big, fat fight over that? Does that mean all the oneness folks who have been baptized in the name of Jesus are going to hell? Heck, they didn't obey Acts 2:38!!
That just hit me in the head like a 2x4. If we're gonna get technical, let's REALLY get technical.

Re: Observations at a Contemporary Baptist Church
Let's take a look at Paul's baptism...
(Acts 22:16 KJV)
(16) And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord. Notice it wasn't Ananias who was to call on the name of the Lord over Paul... it was Paul, the person being baptized, who was to call upon the name of the Lord.
It doesn't matter who says what over you when you're baptized. If you're calling out to Jesus it's effectual. Formulas are inventions of men. Baptism isn't the time for formulas... it's a time for cleansing and the washing away of sin. Only a repentant heart calling out to Jesus in the waters of baptism can experience the remission of sin.
We've ritualized using the name of Jesus just like the Trinitarians have ritualized using the three titles. Both of us have become quite... ceremonial.

Have you ever seen the commercial for Aflac Insurance when Yogi Berra says something that no one is able to respond to?
The duck just drops his mouth open and can't say anything. That's the kind of response I've always seen to the John the Baptist baptizing question.
Here's that picture of the duck with his mouth hanging open.
