When most of the grieving family are Christians (especially the immediate family), or at least have a history in the church, a service that is focused on the joy of seeing Jesus, and knowing their loved one is in His presence can be very comforting indeed.
One of the "going home" services I went to included people (yes, grieving family members) dancing the aisles and having an otherwise rockin' church service.
Since Dan apparently knows the man who died, and probably is familiar with his family and their culture, let's not jump to the conclusion that he handled anything badly.
Anyone watch the video of Billy Cole's funeral? Not really all that sad, if you ask me. There is a LOT of room for rejoicing at the funeral of a Christian, and it doesn't hurt secular people to be exposed to that concept. Further, there is a lot of benefit to the Christian to be led in worshiping the Lord in a time of sorrow.
I wonder what Paul would have said? Do you think he would have shared the gospel message at a funeral?
Psalm 116:15 "Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints."

Thats the truth.. I did I just as he and his family asked me to.

That's cool
I meant funerals where the preacher tries to turn it into a evangelism service. I'd imagine a pre-programmed "coming home" event would be of a different flavor, especially if it was laid out as such in the bulletins and the family knew.

I don't think anyone was really even discussing the original post. As usual, we had rabbit-trailed.

Didn't say you were in a pulpit, just took note that this is what upset you so much that you wanted to walk out of church, but you get on here and the very same thing is oh so funny. You don't make any sense. You yourself said that had something to do with getting you banned, so make up your mind. oh I remember you can't...

This doesn't bother me in the least! Preaching at a funeral is no different than doing THIS at a wedding.

BOTH are appropriate for a specific situation!

I have to admit that when you said to notice the casket lid, I thought it would close by itself during your sermon and spark the Holy Ghost move!
