The rock is the REVELATION Peter had of who Jesus is. The church is built on that revelation.

Yet another thread, starting out with a question about a verse, and being derailed almost immediately by one man's insistence on waging verbal warfare against a class of people...

Sad.

Oh wise one, why don't you tell us why Peter went down to Samaria???

Why didn't it happen with Phillip? Perhaps the essay wouldn't have been long enough without a few irrelevant details???

"But what are the keys?"

The "keys" is a metaphor for the ability to unlock (and lock) the "door to the kingdom", which is accomplished through anointed preaching and teaching.

The scribes and Pharisees took away the "key of knowledge" from people via their false doctrines.

The key(s) therefore is a metaphor for that correct knowledge which allows one entrance into the kingdom of God as a citizen, with all its attendant priviledges and reponsibilities.

The scripture here speaks of the Kingdom of Heaven ... John 3 speaks of the Kingdom of God.
