Im sure all that was covered in detail along with the doctrinal evolutions that became the mainline of UPCI doctrine from the early trinitarian campmeetings to what it is today.

I have no problem with having a play... but our history is rife with issues that need to be dealt with and not sugar coated or rewritten... and we are less than 150 years old.

http://www.seekgod.ca/fatherparham.htm <- Well documented site showing Parham was a active Mason, member of the KKK after 1910, and other assorted nasty things.
They kept it on the down low?

  1. There is One God. This one God reveals Himself distinctly as Father, Son and Holy Ghost.
  2. The Son is God himself in a human form or "God manifested in the flesh" (1Tim 3:16)
  3. Every sinner must repent of their sins.
  4. That Jesus name baptism is the only biblical mode of water baptism.
  5. That the Holy Ghost is for today and is received by faith with the initial evidence of speaking in tongues.
  6. The saint will go on to strive to live a holy life, pleasing to God.

Re: Goss speaking @ UPCI conference

How Parham was portrayed romantically and received as a "brother" last night was of interest, being a "Trinitarian" Apostolic.

I found the portrayal of him addressing a fictional mixed crowd of blacks and whites to be inaccurate. It is well documented that he segregated at his meetings ... African-Americans would need to sit in the rear and could not participate at the altar. And the overall, feel that he somehow supported Seymour and the Azusa movement was interesting as well. He did pay for Seymour's partial train ticket only to reject the movement there as a "venerable religious orgy".

Parham would publish these racist and biting remarks in his Apostolic Faith periodical in 1912, years later :

"In the Azusa mission in Los Angeles , where all this counterfeit Pentecost power was born, in the Upper Room, men and women, whites and blacks, knelt together or fell across one another frequently. A white woman, perhaps of wealth and culture, could be seen thrown back in the arms of a big Buck Nigger, and held tightly thus as she shivered and shook in freak imitation of Pentecost. Horrible awful shame!” (Apostolic Faith, December 1912, pp.4-5)

Re: Goss speaking @ UPCI conference

I'm not that knowledgeable on UPCi history. Could someone summarize the importance of Goss, Seymour and Pharam with the Pentecostal movement? As an outsider looking in, it seems that "what actually happened" and what was ""historically retold" at GC last night are vastly different?

Where's Sam? He's good at summarizing.

Sam, do you have access to the 1946 November issue of the Pentecostal Herald ... namely Goss' message on page 7? I'd love to read it.

Re: Goss speaking @ UPCI conference

A pastor who has posted here ... posted the following healing/miracle last night on his Facebook page of his apparently partially deaf daughter:

Quote:
.... is thanking God for healing Emma tonight for her hearing disorder! She is hearing out of an ear that doesn't (scratch that) didn't have the bones in it to hear with! :=) I serve a healing God that loves His children enough to express His powerful love for them! Now go ahead and shout with me - He's your God too!
Believing the report as I believe God is a healer!

This needs to be documented ... with a doctor's report for the Glory of God.

Re: Goss speaking @ UPCI conference

I see the the 3 stepper hermeneutic was at work yesterday with the Parham praying Agnes Ozman Lebarge through to the the Holy Ghost ... with the climatic moment being him "invoking" the name of Jesus Christ over her while laying hands *enter "No othe Name" song and she receives "it".

Somehow leaving the watcher with the impression it wasn't until the formula was right there was no glossalia evident.

This "re-telling" comes from Parham's historical narrative of that day in Topeka:

Quote:
In December of 1900 we had had our examination upon the subject of repentance, convesion, consecration, sanctification, healing, and the soon coming of the Lord. We had reached in our studies a problem. What about the 2nd Chapter of Acts? I had felt for years that any missionary going to the foreign field should preach in the language of the natives. That if God had ever equipped His ministers in that way He could do it today. That if Balaam's mule could stop in the middle of the road and give the first preacher that went out for money a "bawling out" in Arabic that anybody today ought to be able to preach in any language of the world if they had horse sense enough to let God use their tongue and throat.

But still I believed our experience should tally exactly with the Bible, andneither sanctification nor the anointing that abideth taught by Stephen Merritt and others tallied with the 2nd Chapter of Acts. Having heard so many different proofs as the evidence of their having the Pentecostal baptism, I set the students at work studying out diligently what was the Bible evidence of the baptism of the Holy Ghost, that we might go before the world with something that was indisputable because it tallied absolutely with the Word.

Leaving the school for three days at this task, I went to Kansas City (Missouir) for three days services. I returned to the Schoolon the morning preceding Watch Night services in the year 1900.

At about 10 o'clock in the morning I rang the bell calling all the students into the Chapel to get their report on the matter at hand. To my astonishment they all had the same story, that while there were different things occured when the Pentecostal blessing fell, that the indisputable proof on each occasion was that they spoke with other tongues. About 75 people beside the school which consisted of 40 student, had gathered for the watch night service. A mighty spiritual power filled the entire school.

Sister Agnes N. Ozman, (now LaBerge) asked that hands might be laid upon her to receive the Holy Spirit as she hoped to go to foreign fields. At first I refused, not having the experience myself. Then being further pressed to do it humbly in the name of Jesus, I laid my hand upon her head and prayed. I had scarcely repeated three dozen sentences when a glory fell upon her, a halo seemed to surround her head and face, and she began speaking in the Chinese language, and was unable to speak English for three days. When she tried to write in English to tell us of her experience she wrote the Chinese, copies of which we still have in newspapers printed at that time.
Consequently, Ozman also not only spoke in Chinese ... which she later denied from what I knwo .... but ALSO WROTE IN TONGUES.

More evidence that if something is done in the Lord's name it means invoking his proper name and BAM ... according the interpreters of the Word and history!

It has become their SHAZAM!

This despite a three study on tongues being the "initial evidence" .... before this fateful day ....
