I do think the fact that it's in the past by several years makes this a slightly unfair discussion. If his congregation knew about it and kept him as pastor anyway, or maybe he was reinstated after a time (I don't know), that's their decision.

I would be interested to know whether or not the congregation was aware of his past *mistake*, or if they found out when the media dug it up.
It is up to them of course, but the fact that he's offering to resign now that this comes out makes it appear (to me at least) that the congregation didn't know.

Whatever they do is their business, but my opinion on his actions is that banning facebook as an avenue to adultery is ignorant, and when it comes from a pastor who'd engaged in threesomes with their spouse and a church officer, it appears even more odd.

IMO, there are mistakes and there are MISTAKES. Even scripture states, "Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body."

Though I don't think these people will "go to hell" for keeping this man as their pastor, there seems to be a high probability that his gross lack of judgment will at some point lead them there.

If I were in that church, I wouldn't be.

Great point.

Then there is the verse in Proverbs about adultery.

Pro 6:32 But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul.
Pro 6:33 A wound and dishonour shall he get; and his reproach shall not be wiped away.

It seems that the Bible points out that adultery is something very difficult to get past the reproach of.

It may be that two covenants are broken when there is adultery. Between two people that are suppose to be as one, and a covenant with God.

It seems that this is the one point that will "hang" a preacher more that any other.

With the situation of this preacher, referenced on this thread, this is a situation that like Paul talks about. Even the "World" has some things they expect from the church.

1Co 5:1 It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father's wife.

Wife swapping and threesomes, etc, are frowned upon even by the general population.

Talk about something that will hurt the ministry.

Yes, unless they are polygamist it usually doesn't work out well.

Anybody who engages in the kind of behavior that pastor admitted to is wholly unqualified to ever lead the flock of God. He can repent and be a sheep, but never again a shepherd.

I believe in grace and mercy as much as the next guy, but I'm continually shocked by the lengths people will go to worship at altar of toleration at the expense of Biblical precepts.

Sometimes wrong is just wrong. Disgrace is disgrace. Abomination is abomination.
David functioned as king, priest, and prophet. Was he used in the roles of priest or prophet after his adultery with Bathsheba?

I'm not aware of any verse that states that an elder can't be restored after adultery or sexual sin. I do realize that to restore one it would have to take time and the congregation in question would have to desire his spiritual leadership. If there is a verse for the idea that they can never be restored to their calling, I'd give it review.

I've known ministers who had given into temptation and committed terrible sin that were far more aware of various dangers than others who hadn't. One minister gave in and adultery wrecked his ministry and marriage. He's now very aware of the dangers and signs of the sin of adultery when it's overing over a family.
