Re: Child Slaps his Mom on Doc Phil show-please wa
I hate the "child is smarter than the stupid dolt parents" act that Hollywood always puts on. Kind of like how every commercial portrays the man as an idiot and the woman as an all-knowing Xena type goddess.
Dr Phil feed this big time.

When you start to argue with your child, you have already lost.

I agree. My husband and my oldest daughter get into it sometimes, and I usually give my husband a quiet reminder that he should not argue with her as if she is his equal, but just state how things are going to be, end of discussion.
Not that she can't express her opinion, but it had better be expressed respectfully!
Arguing with a child is futile, since they lack the maturity and knowledge to make good decisions for themselves, and are very unlikely to understand adult reasoning. Some things DO need to be, "Because I said so."

Usually what I do is bring my arguments down to their level. I do use the "because I am your dad" argument sometimes, but that works less and less as they get older. In fact, I have basically abandoned that approach with my 16 year old and my 12 year old. I've realized they have reasons why they want to do this or that, or feel the way they do. So, I let them make their case. It's my way of showing them I respect them as individuals. However, they still know that Dad has the final say because I put that into them when they younger. My two youngest children are still learning the meaning of the word, "don't". Once they progress to being consistent in honoring my "don'ts" we'll move on to letting them plead their case.
