I agree… many try too hard. I have come to the point that I hate to see people seek and beg for it, especially children. To me, it will just come when the time is right. I would rather see kids learning to live for God and applying the word to their life so that they have a hunger to receive more of him. Why some kids receive it young, I don’t know… I’ve thought maybe it was sensitivity to the Spirit….obviously feeling a drawing to God. I am not sure the purpose of it happening when there isn’t much memory of the experience retained.
(sorry for those who have already heard this story)
When my middle daughter was 2years 9 months old, she received the baptism of the Holy Ghost. We were having a typical Sunday night service. She kept telling me she wanted to be baptized. I kept telling her she was too young. Persistent thing that she was, went to several family members asking if she could be baptized. I finally told her in order for her papaw to baptize her, she needed to receive the Holy Ghost, she was way too young. I had never known him to baptize a child that young. I was thinking I was buying some time and shutting her up for the time being. She just said “ok” well, again… I told her to raise her hands, pray and ask God for the Holy Ghost. What I didn’t expect was her to raise her hands, close her eyes and really pray. Tears began to flow down her cheeks and I thought… “wow, she’s serious”. I laid my hand on her head and it was like electric flowing… I bawled like a baby as she stood speaking in tongues for at least 25 min in her own little world with the Lord. She opened her eyes after she was done praying and asked “can I get baptized now??” After her answering some questions, she was baptized. There was tongues and interpretation at her baptism.
I really didn’t pressure my kids to pray as I believe it has to be something you are drawn to. I have no clue when my oldest received it, she claimed to speak in tongues if I ever asked her if she wanted the Holy Ghost. One time I looked over as she was praying with her sister in church, and I poked my husband… “hey, she does speak in tongues…check it out” lol
I was eight and I prayed for it… because it was expected…but I really don’t remember anything about feeling different at all. I spoke in tongues for a long time in life before I really experienced an awesome break through of his Spirit working in my life at a much older age.
