I think the simplest definition I've heard is this. Basically there were three "waves" of the tongues movement in the United States during the twentieth century.
1)
Pentecostals trace their origins back to the Azusa Street revival in the early twentieth century (AoG, UPCI, etc.)
2)
Charismatics trace their origins back to the 1960s renewal movements within mainline denominations and the Roman Catholic Church (Oral Roberts, Jesus Movement, Calvary Chapel, etc.). Proponents tended to remain within their current denominations.
3)
Third Wave Christians trace their origins back to the 1980s renewal movement. Proponents tended to branch out and create new independent networks rather than remain in their mainline denominations [International House of Prayer, Vineyard, Newfrontiers, Sovereign Grace Ministries (?) etc.]
The denomination examples I give for the second and third waves are uncertain, since there is much overlap between those two waves.
