"We did not wear uniforms. The lady workers dressed in the current fashions of the day, ...silks...satins...jewels or whatever they happened to possess. They were very smartly turned out, so that they made an impressive appearance on the streets where a large part of our work was conducted in the early years.
"It was not until long after, when former Holiness preachers had become part of us, that strict plainness of dress began to be taught.
"Although Entire Sanctification was preached at the beginning of the Movement, it was from a Wesleyan viewpoint, and had in it very little of the later Holiness Movement characteristics. Nothing was ever said about apparel, for everyone was so taken up with the Lord that mode of dress seemingly never occurred to any of us."
Quote from Ethel Goss (widow of 1st UPC Gen Supt. Howard Goss) book "The Winds of God"
Shelly is a friend of mine. He's a good guy. The comments about his beard and his family are really stupid since you obviously don't know him. The folksnthat got upset about the minorities in his church are racists and not Christian since those people reflected the community in which the church was located. Shelly just decided to reach the neighborhoods around the church.
Sometimes Apostolic churches carry such a large amount of dysfunction that when a transformation takes place, people can't grow with the transformation. They are damaged goods to begin with and their spiritual depth and understanding is about thimble deep. Folks miss the good ole days of youth rallies, evangelists and revivals, choirs and camp meetings. No one bothers to ask if this is where God is, and is this what He's asking of us. No, we're simply happy to exist in our little Pentecostal church culture bubble, while the neighborhood around our church hasn't a clue, while the community doesn't even know we exist.
So someone comes along and tries to follow the Lord and follow the Scripture. Comfortable church folks get uncomfortable and they take their tithes and offerings elsewhere to a church that will help preserve the church of their youth: singing 1940s hymns, dress codes from the 50s and an all white congregation...

My experience exactly. Cogent insight here!
People fall in love with and become fiercely devoted to the familiar, leaving the unfamiliar (AKA The Lost) out in the cold.

You about summed her up there. It is pretty much a constant mindset.
In any case I think a man saddled with the name Shelly and a woman with the name Trona deserves our prayers!
I bet they don't have a problem with their names being taken when they are setting up user names on internet accounts. (lest anybody think I am serious I actually think it is cool having uncommon names).

Yikes, no. However I had an aunt who used to work in the welfare office of a Southern state and her stories of babies names were pretty amazing.
