In fact, I find the deeper into God's presence I go, the more focused, intent, and sober I become. I disappear, as it were, from the world around me, sometimes as if in a trance. As God draws me in, the clarity increases. Utter silence, utter stillness.
These are the peaks experiences of my life.

Too be honest I don't quite understand the turn "drunk in the Spirit" and what it implies, but in my experience I've had what you just described. And there were other times that I did lose all control of myself, as in my mind is in one place, but I can't control my actions. Sometimes I will get so happy, be filled with so much joy, happiness and laughter, that nothing in this world compares.
There were other times when the spirit would take over me and I would just dance, being controlled of God, and not myself. It's just like speaking in tongues, where you have no control over your tongue, or the language you're speaking, but the spirit would speak through you.

Re: Drunk in the Spirit
Experiencing great joy and celebrating that joy through praise and adoration of God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ is of course expected, and natural.
I have danced before the Lord until exhausted, shouted myself hoarse, and clapped until my hands were swollen, but I never once lost control of my being or faculty sufficient to say I was "drunk in the Spirit".
I think sometimes we give our control away and act in ways that the Bible does not prescribe, and attribute to the Holy Spirit. God is not a marionetter pulling our strings. We need to be active, conscious participants in what God is doing in, through, or to, us.
To say God just takes control and does whatever He wants with us without our active, conscious--AND IN CONTROL--participation creates an association I am not comfortable creating.

Re: Drunk in the Spirit
I don't believe God "takes" control. Instead people "give" him control. How else do you speak in tongues. Does he give you one line in your head to quote or does he control the words of your tongue. I don't think anyone means that they blacked out and woke up hours later not knowing what they have done. Instead they surrendered their self in worship and gave up control to freely worship. Their always is co-operation.

Re: Drunk in the Spirit
I have witnessed people carried out of the church house under the power of the Holy Ghost. They weren't faking it.
My precious grandmother used to, in her own words, "get my blessing and go into a trance." As a child in the church, I didn't understand it, but I vividly recall this...
It was a Sunday evening service, and I might have been 7 or 8 years old. I was sitting next to grandma when she got blessed. The choir director turned, and said, "Sis. Sophie, are you going to come up and sing with us?" and grandma didn't know who she was. I remember taking a prescription bottle from her purse that showed her name on it...
Years later grandma said that those moments scared her so badly she prayed, and asked the Lord to take them away.
"And I never was blessed as much as I was during those times."
NOW...I can't explain this. Grandma wasn't in a 'trance,' but in her 3rd grade educational mind, that was how she explained it. My grandmother was a godly woman and not faking this. I was an eye witness to it.
There is no Scripture for it, but it happened, and I do not doubt for a second that it was God.
The Spirit if the Lord is the same, but some of us old timers will tell y'all that it was different back then.
I can remember seeing and hearing about people receiving the Holy Ghost and speaking in tongues for hours, AND prophesying. Back in the day, prophesying often came with the Holy Ghost experience, at least it did here..
Another grandma story...on the night she first received the Holy Ghost, my dad said grandma spoke in tongues all the way home, and even into part of the next day.
Things like this are almost unheard of today, and I miss it...

Re: Drunk in the Spirit
Thanks for sharing. I was there! My wife's pastor knew Bro. Nelson. There was a conference they would go to probably in the 1950s when they got to know each other. I've read his biography a few times. Neat story of an old timer.
