Re: United States Men Beat Frogs For Gold!!!

My "Newfie" mother would never use or allow her children to use that word for a French speaking person,so please, all Newfies are not insensitive to different cultures.

I resent the implication that my Newfie friend is insensitive. He speaks his experience.

I am not him but I was in LaHarve and Paris summer before last if that counts!

Nothing is more beautiful than Paris in the spring or summer and nothing is more arrogant than the French people in spring or summer or winter or fall........... LOL!!!!

Nothing you will say can take away my joy at making that French swimmer eat his words. He was so upset he couldn't even get out of the swimming pool. He had his back to the camera and was hunched over with his shoulders shaking a little so I wondered if maybe he was even crying.

Normally I have a big soft spot for losers in sporting contests but not when they have bragged about how they are going to beat their opponenents (I don't care what Nationality they are. If the Americans had been bragging I would have thought they deserved to lose).

"We did not wear uniforms. The lady workers dressed in the current fashions of the day, ...silks...satins...jewels or whatever they happened to possess. They were very smartly turned out, so that they made an impressive appearance on the streets where a large part of our work was conducted in the early years.

"It was not until long after, when former Holiness preachers had become part of us, that strict plainness of dress began to be taught.

"Although Entire Sanctification was preached at the beginning of the Movement, it was from a Wesleyan viewpoint, and had in it very little of the later Holiness Movement characteristics. Nothing was ever said about apparel, for everyone was so taken up with the Lord that mode of dress seemingly never occurred to any of us."

This is where you show your restraint, he he. To my Canadian buddies...After living in Canada for a while I have become used to the idea of showing respect to my french neighbors and KNOW of the racism that exists here and what the Christians try to avoid...but....you gotta know...Americans DESPISE all things French.
That's why I went easy on the use of it by the Americans in my post. I understand they don't have the same culture as we do here.

The French and the English are still at odds many times in Canada.
I have my own frustrations but I don't use the term Frog as many find it offensive and racist. I can certainly understand how it would hurt a French speaking person. I've only met one lady who was not offended by it. She is a short little spitfire my mom worked with for many years. Everyone bought her frogs.. she had a huge collection in her work office. No one every called her a frog... but the running joke was to buy her something frog every time there was a special occasion.
That was a personal joke between friends and longtime coworkers though...

Canada has unique challenges... especially with some French in the province of Quebec wanting to separate etc... so it is very touchy up here. However, I realize this is a predominately American forum, and you only tolerate us Canadians... so I will refrain from chastising you too badly at this time.

Depends where that French person was from.

If that French person was from Quebec... it would be a HUGE insult.
New Brunswick... not as much but still ticked off.
Newfoundland... they get made fun of no matter what language they speak by all thier fellow Canadians.

Again, I can be more lenient with you Americans, because it's not really part of your culture. But up here.. I don't advise you ever use it while visiting eastern Canada.

Please read my posts.

And remember, though some who've responded may not be French themselves, they may have very very close ties with French speaking people.
It's only an overreaction if you aren't close to anyone who would be offended by that.

I personally wouldn't equate it with the N-word, since that was a slavery issue.

If you can't pick on the French then who can you pick on?

You know political correctness has gone just too far when picking on the French is out of bounds.

Really Renda, you'd have to live here in order to understand.

The French and English battled over who would "own" Canda. (After they ran off the Natives... which of course is another sore spot in our culture even today)

It really is offensive to many.

I simply think it's a matter of not understanding the term and the culture surrounding it.
I think it's safe to say that Canada knows a whole lot more about American history and culture than Americans do about us.

However, if Admin doesn't see any need for changes to be made, even though some members of the forum have been personally offended by the use of the term "Frogs"...

WHATEVER.

I thought you were supposed to guess leprechauns' names for gold -- not beat frogs. That's one myth I've never heard of.
