Just a comment, as a rule semi-gloss is used because it's so washable; ie kitchens, bathrooms and "kids" rooms.
I wouldn't jump on the semi-gloss if the walls aren't perfect. The semi-gloss will highlight the imperfections.

I'd suggest eggshell or flat enamel if I was speaking with a customer.
(part of my job involves mixing paint )
Thanks. I'll keep that in mind. However, even without her artistic workings, the walls aren't perfect. LOL!

Re: Need advice about latex paint

Ok. It's been a nightmare since I started.

The walls that were decorated with what I thought was paint was instead glitter glue. It wouldn't come off no matter what I used, so I ended up taking a knife and cutting around each decoration, then peeling them off the wall, sometimes taking the paper with it. Almost one entire wall was done in this manner. My boyfriend mudded each area, as he used to own and fix his own properties, and I sanded them. There were several areas to be done this way.

My son and I used Kilz on the entire house, but it wasn't until about the 7th or 8th day until we were able to do that! We have been working for about a total of 14 days, at least 5 hours a day, and all I have left to do is the trimwork in the kitchen and the backroom. I have yet to strip the doors (3 of them) and the kitchen cabinets, which will be done at a later date.

Today, the property manager came by and was impressed with what I've done. He said the owner was going to redo my lease (which was to start on Sept 7th) for Sept 15th, and reimburse me for my expenses. I told him that since I pay less than $20 a day for rent to live there, I didn't think it was unreasonable to get a free day for every day we've been there working. In addition, my son and daughter have been working there are night when I've been unable to be there.

The property manager agreed with me and will talk to the owner about giving me two weeks rent free. I hope he sees the difference, since pictures were taken before and after. I'll post them after I move and get my computer up and running (it crashed on me the other day and I had to format it....again! Lost everything on it too.).

Tomorrow they are laying carpet in the living room and my son's room. They put carpet in my daughter's room and put linoleum in my back room, and everything looks really nice, considering it was more like a funhouse when I first saw it. All I have left for tomorrow is about 4 hours worth of trim, then moving my stuff in all weekend.

This will be the last time I ever subject myself to such a project for someone else. It's been a nightmare, but in the end, I'm happy with what I have.

Thanks to everyone for suggestions also. I used a lot of them.

Re: Need advice about latex paint

Glad you got something accomplished, HO.

What did the stripper do to the glitter paint? Did it soften it at all? I'm very curious about the result.

Ever since you posted this thread, I've been thinking about repainting my living room. LOL! I might get to that before Christmas. I take a really long time to settle on a color and then I dive in. LOL!

Sounds like things are moving along - happy for you.

God Bless!

Cool Re: Need advice about latex paint

I often hear of "nightmare" experiences from customers, but this rental house tops anything I've heard....

The end is in sight

It wasn't glitter paint, it was glitter GLUE! Stripper did NOTHING at all, just took the paint off of it, leaving the decoration behind.

On one area, she'd painted a rainbow. I'm not sure what kind of craft paint she used, but when I post the pic, you will see that the stripper did NOTHING on that paint either, although it removed the paint from the wooden door when some stripper dropped on it. When I wiped the stripper off, you couldn't tell I'd done anything to it at all.

I don't mind painting. I wasn't prepared for the remodeling I ended up having to do.

I'm finishing up today and taking pics.

I went with semi-gloss for the trim around doorways and satin for the walls. However, I can see what you were talking about in regard to imperfections. It looks much better regardless, but the walls need to be taken down and redone. It won't be me doing it though!! But the seams can be seen almost everywhere.

Right, I meant glue and not paint.

Thanks, HO. That's very interesting. I would think the stripper would, at least, soften the glue so that it could be scraped more easily. I wonder why the chemicals wouldn't melt it a little? Hmmmmmmm..... I'll have to buy some and experiment with that.

Yes, you'd think it would soften it, but it didn't do anything. Sanding it was just as impossible as well. I had no choice but to cut around it and mud and sand the area. Also, I just used the citrus stripper...perhaps something stronger might have done the trick, but it was hot and humid, and I didn't want the windows open.

I'm thinking the StripX would have done the trick. I'd be surprised if it didn't. It burns like the dickens if it touches your skin! Well, glad you got that over with.

Could you wallpaper over the walls instead of replacing them? It's really easy to put up.
