Am I the only one who has noticed that fewer people say grace and pray over their food anymore???
I am even guilty of being increasingly forgettful.
i remember growing up my parents NEVER forgot to pray first.
what's wrong with us
Being raised in a Greek Orthodox home I was taught to give thanks AFTER we ate with that airing the cross sign......I was also told that was more biblical than praying before we eat....anybody have any comments on that?
Of course, being Pentecostal, we now pray before we eat....and still do....it's not like a legalistic tradition....just a reminder to give God thanks.
My mother told me that before i was born AD Urshan ran a revival at our church. He would say LONG Prayers and everyone had to join hands and sing "Victory in Jesus" before they could eat.
.
AD Urshan... I remember being told by someone who knew him in Indy that AD Urshan walked in a room where just this person was alone....in a deep voice he bellowed.. "HAVE YOU RECEIVED THE HOLY GHOST SINCE YOU BELEIVED??"...and this person as a little boy yelped "NO!" and bolted from the room!

The Mennonites give thanks before, and on occaision after as well - especially if a minister is visiting.
In all fairness do you think the Greek Orthodox folks view it as legalistic tradition....just a reminder to give God thanks? I am sure a little of both is true about most of us regardless of denomination.

I have had company this weekend and so I haven't had time to comment on this previously, and I don't have the time to read all of the posts, so forgive me if this has been stated already.
But I do bless my food most of the time... occasionally I forget when hurrying. But this is the scripture I use.. and I usually pray God will sanctify the food to my body's use. In His name of course.
Verse 4 and 5 specifically. I thank Him and ask Him to sanctify it.
1Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
2Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;
3Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.
4For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving: (Which I would take to be a thankful heart and expressing thanks is something we should do often, if not with every meal.)
5For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.

Psalm 19:14
Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.
We pray before we eat at our house. Because there are four of us and four sides to the table, each person gets on side. So we go around the table taking turns. It's a different persons turn each time we sit down. Our boys NEVER forget whose turn it is. I am very proud of them because they are never embarrassed to pray even when they have non-Christian friends joining us for supper.
Funny story:
One time when Justin was 3, our pastor and his wife came to dinner. We asked the pastor to pray before the meal. He was one of those who could ramble on and on for eternity - which he was doing! After Maurice had gone on and on longer than Justin could handle anymore, he just spoke up loud and clear, "God is great, God is good, let us thank Him for our food. AMEN!" and reached out for food! The rest of us were doing all we could do to keep from busting a gut laughing but that didn't stop the pastor at all. He just kept right on praying!! LOL
