Re: Health, Wellness, and Nutrition Thread

ya, it's pretty easy to get into vanity there, i think. But also, we are terminally sedentary now, so i wouldn't discourage any physical activity; except to caution that heavy lifters suffer more joint problems later in life.

We raise a lot of our own food, & we do it organically. We have cows, chickens, turkeys, rabbits, & raise a big garden. We avoid sugar most of the time, & we grind our own wheat. I wouldn't want to live any other way.

Been heavy lifting for 43 years, and I'm having no problems.

i'd say that's kind of rare, to never have a joint issue heavy lifting; a form thing, maybe? Can't think of a better way to keep bone mass, that's great!

EB - do you know of any one who has tried the really heavy lifting and low rep regimen?
I have read several studies on it, but it is so different I have not tried it.

It's the best way to develop strength. If you eat right and sleep right as well, it will build massive size. Think Olympic weightlifter or Powerlifter.

That's awesome! Do you sell any of your produce, meat or dairy?

well, and vanity?
"Strength" has other gauges, too; stamina, for instance.
Massive bulk comes with a price, especially as you get older. You can become a slave to heavy lifting, like anything else. How do you retire? You cannot just stop lifting, or you are going to be a mess!
Typically what i have seen happen is, a heavy lifter tends to want to push it, reaching for new heights, and at some point something goes; a shoulder or whatever. Then they are forced into either rehabbing or taking time off, and must rest at least the shoulder for a period--like maybe a year, with a torn rotator cuff; if they're lucky. So now you end up with this massive guy who can't beat me arm wrestling, and i'm like 6'2" 155 lbs., and that is the least of his problems.

One of their biggest issues seems to be adjusting their diet, at that point--they are used to eating a certain way, and now all those big power muscles are losing their tone, because of course the guy disdains low weight high reps, and so he is caught in a vicious circle. X footballers deal with this a lot, it is practically a syndrome. My last boss is an X, and a couple of my dad's friends are, too.
I note that none of these guys are able to fast for even one day, and all are diabetic or pre-diabetic. I don't mean to imply that this end is inevitable, but it is hugely prevalent. Have a plan to "mass-down" at some point, imo, and i wouldn't be seeking new 100%s after age 60.

We do sell the occasional steer, but never the dairy. It's not legal in our state. We usually give away extra produce. Our 5 & 10 year old have a egg business though. They gather, clean, & pack them. They also help out with the care of the chickens.
