Jefferson Randolph "Soapy" Smith

They're having a big convention around here this summer to celebrate the 110th Anniversary of his passing and to honor his political legacy.

Re: Famous People from Your City.

Worth a bump, since it isn’t timely.

Merely Haggard might have been from Kern County, but he lived in Palo Cedro, near Redding. I knew him, and I know his whole band(and played in various bands with them over the years), which, upon Merle’s death, picked up with Kris Kristofferson until his death.

They now play for Merle’s son, Ben. He lives right down the road on the same property.

Ricky Phillips (bass player for Styx 2003–2024) is from here.

J’anna Jacoby (fiddle/mandolin for Rod Stewart) is a friend and from here.

There’s more. But that’s a start.

Re: Famous People from Your City.

Nashville has too many famous people from here to name! Maybe not originally born here but call Nashville home. My favorite area celebrity is Anson Mount of Hell on Wheels and Star Trek Strange New Worlds fame. He went to high school in Dixon TN and graduated from the University of the South here in TN before moving away for decades. This past year he moved back to the Nashville area with his wife and daughter.

"We did not wear uniforms. The lady workers dressed in the current fashions of the day, ...silks...satins...jewels or whatever they happened to possess. They were very smartly turned out, so that they made an impressive appearance on the streets where a large part of our work was conducted in the early years.

"It was not until long after, when former Holiness preachers had become part of us, that strict plainness of dress began to be taught.

"Although Entire Sanctification was preached at the beginning of the Movement, it was from a Wesleyan viewpoint, and had in it very little of the later Holiness Movement characteristics. Nothing was ever said about apparel, for everyone was so taken up with the Lord that mode of dress seemingly never occurred to any of us."
