I am 26 and i have played the piano since i was 5, (by ear). I've been playing in church since i was 10, and played the B3 since I was 15. my favorite keys are C# and G. i have been heavily influenced by black gospel music and smooth jazz, which is very evident when you hear me play. I am trying to learn some southern gospel, to me it is the most complicated to play. (good southern gospel style, like anthony burger or stan whitmire)
I love Stan. When he plays SG he has a ragtime feel. It really adds another flavor to SG. And I think he is the only SG keyboard that it. Of course, he can play anything. He has "broadway" cd of and love song cd.

Anthony could beat out a piano like no other. He was not my favorite piano. I really like Roger though. And Gerald Wolfe with Greater Vision is awesome.

A lot of their music is even spelled out where they write out each actual note you play in the chords, so all you have to know is what the keys are on a keyboard.

Here is a list of such chorded songs. http://www.earnestandroline.com/Music/chords.html
If you explore on this site, you'll find some midis and vids as well.

There are many others that I can post later.
Great thanks!

Please post the other links. Please. I am really at a point where my playing needs to grow so I need some help. I really like gospel and would love to be able to play that style more.

Re: Piano Players Only Thread!!

I have only been on AFF about a week and I just discovered this thread. I have been playing in church for about 40 years. I took a few private lessons when I was in the 3rd and 4th grade but I am mostly self-taught. I can read music but I'm slow; I don't have a quick eye-to-hand reaction time. I prefer to play by ear. My two favorite songs to play are How Great Thou Art and Goodby World Goodby. I have one song on apostolicartists.com and nothing yet on youtube.

Do you play mostly by ear (like a true Apostolic! ) or do you play by note?

How long have you been playing? Do you play in church?

I used to play by ear in my Dad's church from childhood till I left home.

I can sight read (singing) by note. I never learned to play the piano utilizing sheet music. It always intimidated me.

Re: Piano Players Only Thread!!

I took years of classical piano before graduating high school. When I went to JCM, you were required to learn to play by ear as a Music Major, which was totally new to me. (WHAT IN THE WORLD WAS I THINKING MAJORING IN MUSIC??) Anyway, with the help of the good Lord and Wayne Goodine, I mastered all the songs we had to do by memorizing everything. However, playing naturally by ear never came to me.

Years later, when we took the church in Adamsville, I had to be the designated piano player since no one else could play at all. For eleven years, I played and even led worship part of that time. Guess what? All that practice at JCM paid off after all! It still never came easily to me, but while I was playing I would consciously be thinking, "this chord leads to this chord".....it was never natural like it was for Mr. Steinway and others. But God blessed the efforts and the church grew in spite of me!

I was being trained at JCM in the Music dept. for something down the road that I couldn't see at the time. God is good!

Re: Piano Players Only Thread!!

I'm 48.. I've played since... I don't know, I'd have to ask my mother when I took my first piano lesson. I've got free songs that can be downloaded on www.sermon.net , just look up Jerry Moon, Boger Texas, or Biblical Apostolic Church. I know my notes, but play by ear. I love to find a new insturment to learn to play though...

It doesn't work that way with some contemporary music; sometimes you don't know what will be next, and sometimes I hear conflicting sounds, like a bass note that doesn't match the chord.
