To me there's a big difference, but I can understand, or at least not fault someone who sees his/her body as potential advertising space to show a potentially spiritual message. Didn't Paul boast of the scourge marks in his body suffered for the cause of Christ? We don't live such a culture today, but I can stretch my good taste far enough to understand someone who wants to use body markings as a tool. Of course doing so shunts away a large portion of their society, but perhaps could access a different segment.

same reason for putting on finger rings, toe rings, bracelets, neckties, broaches, necklaces, pins, fancy buttons, belt buckles, shoe buckles, chains around the neck, patterned cloth garments, watch bands, nose rings, navel rings, and rings and piercings in various places --decoration

Thank you for including neckties! It's all on a continuum, where anyone can divide the line anywhere they wish. Neckties are ultimately silly too.

They are adornment, but at least it doesn't involve self mutilation to do it.
