I have heard it preached that God did give His people jewelry, but then took it back from them because they became idolatrous - they used that as justification and in conjunction with the NT scripture dealing with costly array, pearls etc.
Basicaly the preacher was saying that the jewlery was not bad, it was the people's reaction to having the jewelry that was error and therefore we should not wear jewelry either because after all what is the purpose of such things if not for vanity.
At any rate...on a side note, my company has a foundry in Winnepeg Manitoba...next time I am up I should visit! Not to puff you up, but if I lived in your neck of the woods, I would definetely visit your church!!
