The double negative is viewed by those who follow Noah Webster and the New England take on English as a no-no, a grammatical faux pas. In the South, however, as well as in Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and various parts of England, the double negative was used for
emphasis. Which has parallels in Greek and other languages.
Since the New England and Webster crowd considered the aristocratic agrarian society of the South as a cultural enemy, they disparaged Southron English as the language of rubes and "backwoods ignorant hicks". The New England Websterites were part of the New England Puritan movement (which gave birth to the American version of LIBERALISM) and succeeded in taking over American education and politics and currently run the whole society. Which is why y'all were taught in school to never use a double negative.
