True. But it does say that he straightway went and preached. Does the Bible ever say that Paul received the Spirit? And should we assume he didn’t ever?

It seems that God made provision for him to receive the Spirit. That was why Ananias went to Paul, sent by God that he would receive his sight AND be filled with the Holy Ghost. He received his sight but it doesn’t say he received the Holy Ghost. It certainly could be inferred though.

I can’t help but believe that we make a bigger deal out of speaking in tongues than the early church did.

The point is we assume he received the Spirit. If that is plausible, then it is just as plausible to assume he spoke in tongues given everything else in Scripture.

If the text not saying he spoke in tongues means he didn't, then it necessarily follows that he didn't receive the Spirit either, because it doesn't say he did that, either.
