Re: Need help with a question...

Lydia Swinton (1876-1948) was a Peniel Mission worker who assisted Selma Nelson at the Peniel Mission in Fresno, Ca. She briefly aided survivors of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake who had settled in Alameda, Ca.

In 1920, she became pastor of the Pentecostal Mission in Stockton. She ran the mission and had a small Bible school to train mission workers and ministers. She pastored there until her passing in 1948.

Re: Need help with a question...

Selma Nelson (1886-1971) was a Peniel Mission worker in Frenso, California. She was there from 1904-1915. In 1915, Nelson opened the Salem Faith Home, which ended up being called the Emmanuel Pentecostal Mission. She pastored there until 1944.

Besides the church, Nelson also ran a small Bible school for mission workers and ministerial training.

Harry Morse, who was also part of the Peniel Mission, fellowshipped with the missions pastored by Swinton and Nelson. Their collective alumni include David Gray and Clyde Haney.

Harriet Marling (1883-1975) was the wife of a candy store owner in Lodi, California when she felt the call to the ministry. Under the urging of Harry Morse, and inspired by Aimee McPherson, she entered the ministry and founded a Pentecostal Mission in Bend, Oregon. She pastored there from 1924-1975.

Re: Need help with a question...

Mattie Crawford (1886-1973) She was ordained in the Holiness Christian Church in 1916. She was from Illinois. In 1919, under the leadership of W. W. Fisher (of Los Angeles) she travels to Nicaragua. She returns in 1921.

Crawford planned on going to Europe as a missionary as a PAW missionary. This was in 1921. But for some reason the trip was cancelled.

Instead, Crawford began to evangelize in the states. This continued until 1930, when she settled down in Los Angeles. By 1926, she was nondenominational. She was known as a healer. She was also known as the female Billy Sunday.

In 1930, she founded the School of Science and Philosophy. It was not Pentecostal. It was astrology and biblical prophecy and women's health and beauty. She sold health beauty products, which were fraudulent. She ended up doing a 4 month jail term for violating the State Medical Act.

Afterwards, she changed vocations completely and was a real estate agent.

Re: Need help with a question...

Margaret Peden and Ella Andrews.

Peden (1886-1937) and Andrews (1882-1945) were Canadian Pentecostals from at least 1914, where they were part of a camp meeting along with Andrew Urshan and Frank Denny.

In 1927, they moved to California, where they preached a revival for Harry Morse in Oakland. They then settled down in Pasadena, where they founded and pastored the Good News Temple. They pastored there until the death of Peden in 1937.

Both were musically gifted, but Peden was the preacher who was known to have a sharp intellect.

Re: Need help with a question...

Mary Gray, was married to Frank Gray. Her Pentecostal heritage began, at the least, while attending the church of Frank Ewart, back in 1913. By 1918, they were in Yokohama, Japan as Pentecostal missionaries. They returned to Los Angeles in 1924. Both their son, David and daughter, Olive attended a small Pentecostal Bible school in Oakland, California. This mission and Bible school were pastored by Harry Morse.

David Gray was instrumental in the small Oneness training center in San Diego and Olive Haney played a prominent role in founding a small Oneness Bible college in Stockton, California.

Winifred Westfield (1880-1956) the first white person born on the San Carlos Indian reservation in Arizona.

In 1910, she was a worker in the Peniel Mission in Seattle, Washington.

In 1915, along with Ewart, Harry Morse and a few others, assists in the foundation of the Pentecostal Mission in Oakland.

Westfield evangelizes in California until 1921, when she moves to Arizona. She will spend the rest of her ministry years in Arizona preaching and teaching at a variety of Oneness churches in the Phoenix area.

Re: Need help with a question...

Mae Iry (1875-1953)

Mae Iry first connection I can find is working with DCO Opperman back in 1920. Prior to that, she had relatives who lived at Zion City, Illinois.

Mae Iry was deserted by her husband and is divorced in 1914.

She is a missionary in north China from 1921-1927. After a short visit to the states, she returns to north China and stays there from 1928 until 1935. She was a POW during WW2 and ended up in a POW camp in Japan.

After the war, Mae Iry returned to the states and retired from ministry.

Upon her second return to north China, she brought with her Kathryn Hendricks and Virginia Weddle.
