Windows Registration

What happens if you don't register your copy of Windows after installing it on your computer?

I have a legit copy, but I have 4 days left to activate. I can't find the product code, so what will happen in 5 days?

XP will force you to call.

If you do not have a Certificate of Authencity, you will need to purchase one.

Vista will shut you down and you will not have ANY access to your drive.

I think with XP you won't be able to update critical updates too....Does it ask for the product code? I mean it's already installed. All it wants to do is phone home. I have not installed XP in a while so after installation I don't recall if it ask for the installation code. Do you have the orignal CD? Was it installed from the factory? Often they put the product code on a sticker and stick it to the PC itself

Spoken like a true Believer!

Tyler Nally over on Higher-fire had Fedora on a Stinkpad when he was at MacMillian Publishing.

Ah alas, I have yet to atain true believer status, Unix on Server, windows on desktop, the two are not one. I am a two OS believer, BUT....

BUT....

BUT....

I repeat myself because this is a great big BUT...

If all you do on a computer is surf, email, do Word processing, maybe a spreadsheet...

DO NOT blow money on windoze. Just about any Linux distro today is an easy install, comes with open office and a bunch of other stuff, Both KDE and Gnome(see footnote) are easy to navigate and use.

Do it. It's free. If you are not using high end specialized apps, or using the "togetherness" office features....

There is no reason for you to use windows in any of its flavors...

Footnote: KDE and Gnome are Graphical User Interfaces, they let you access programs and files in the windows-like familiar environment. The difference: Where the Windows desktop is embedded into the operating system, in linus, it is not, giving you the choice of different environments.
