Hymns... does it matter..........
Does it matter to you who wrote the hymns you sing in worship or what they believed when they wrote them?
I'm reading a book about the history of the great hymns of the church. I am seriously surprised how many of the hymns that we know and love were written by people who belonged to the Unitarian church.
I did a search to find what the Unitarian church believes and found that they don't believe in the trinity. But they also don't believe that Jesus was any more than a good man.
How those people came up with such fantastic words for their hymns when their theology is soooooooooo far off.
What do you think? Does it make any difference to you what the song writer believed when they wrote what they wrote?

It doesn't to me. It only matters what the words mean to me.

Re: Hymns... does it matter..........
The funny thing is that I've read on here from people who refuse to sing Lanny Wolfe songs anymore because of his sexual orientation. I'm not saying that being gay is acceptable. Not at all.
But if it's not ok to sing someone's songs because of their sexual orientation, why is it ok to sing songs written by someone who doesn't even believe that Jesus is God?
I'm not saying that I wouldn't sing those songs. But then I don't have a problem singing the songs written by LW either. Like you said, it's the words of the songs that are important. Right?

I'll sing Lanny's stuff 'cause, "I Feel Good"!
But seriously, can we wait for Lanny Wolfe to identify himself as gay before we officially state it as fact?
And I've always had a problem with the people that loudly proclaim that trinitarians are absolutely going to hell, and then go sing "Amazing Grace" or use the King James Version of the bible which was translated by 54 trinitarians.
So if you're not one of those trinitarian-hell-forecasters, then sing away. But if you are, how could sing songs about God from someone who is going to hell?

I have no idea who Lanny Wolfe is. I may have heard or even sung some of the songs he wrote. I can't judge him anyway. The song Amazing Grace to me is just that, amazing. It's amazing that God's grace saves us from sin.

Re: Hymns... does it matter..........
My favorite hymn is It Is Well With My Soul. I have no idea who wrote it or what "denomination" he/she was. It doesn't really matter to me, the words of that song just speak to my soul.

Cindy,
this song was written by Horatio G. Spafford.
He was an attorney in Chicago who lost a fortune in the huge fire there in 1871 because he had invested heavily in real estate. About that same time, he lost his 4 year old son (only son) to scarlet fever.
He poured himself into rebuilding the city and helping the 100,000 who had been left homeless.
In Nov. 1873, he decided to take his wife and daughters to Europe to hear Moody and Sanky in evangelistic meetings in England, and then go on and take vacation.
But something came up, so he sent his wife Anna and their four daughters on ahead. They sailed on the French liner Ville du Havre.
On Nov. 22, 1873, the ship they were on collided with an iron sailing vessel, ripping a hole in it. It sank within 2 hours. There were 226 fatalities including Horatio's 4 daughters. His wife survived and was found clinging to a piece of the wreckage. There were 47 survivors who made it to Cardiff, Wales. When his wife arrived, she sent a cable to her husband that said, "Saved alone."
he immediately sailed to join her. On the way, the captain called him aside and told him that he believed that they were right over the spot where his daughters had died. Horation went to his cabin, but couldn't sleep. He wrote the words down, "It is well; the will of God be done." Later he wrote his famous hymn based on those words.
Interesting story, eh?

Very interesting, Margie. Thanks for finding this. Says a lot about someone who can lose so much and still be able to say, with God, It Is Well With My Soul.
