10/12/1905 (Eugene Guard, p. 1) Ryan was chased out of Eureka, Caby a mob for visiting the home of a lady. He was in town preaching at the Methodist Church.

1906 (AFM) articles in paper

10/10/1906 (Statesman Journal, p.2) Ryan expecting friends from Azusa Street. They will travel by boat.

11/20/1906 (Statesman Journal, p. 6) The platform was occupied by Rev. M. L, Ryan, who has had charge of this mission for several years together with Mr. Shipley, his father-in-law', two young women converts and two women from Los Angeles, recent arrivals here. One of these is a mulatto or quadroon, with decided southern plantation, accent; the other a white woman well along in years. These two, with a well dressed young man, are the three people who are supposed to speak with "new tongues." The three are from Los Angeles, where people claiming to speak in "new tongues" have lately created something of 'a sensation.' Mr; Ryan, it is understood; claims also to have the gift of tongues now a recent acquisition, and others of the flock are seeking it, including Mrs.Ryan.

10/26/1906 (Corvallis Gazette, p. 1) Ryan has lived in Salem for last 10 years. He is from Polk County. He is on his way from Los Angeles with Pentecostalism.

9/15/1907 arrival in Tokyo (passport) There are three waves of Pentecostal missionaries to Japan: 1) the Apostolic Faith Movement (1907-1909); 2) independent lay missionaries (1910-1918); and 3) the denominational Pentecostal missionaries (1919-1941).49 The first known Pentecostals to arrive in Japan were from a group in 1907 led by Martin L. Ryan from Spokane, Washington. In 1906, Ryan had traveled to the Azusa Street Mission and experienced the baptism of the Holy Spirit. His group, composed of six families, called themselves the Apostolic Faith Movement in Japan.50 They worked mainly in Yokohama and the Tokyo vicinity while they were in Japan.

12/1908 The Pentecost magazine has Ryan article from Tokyo plus a pic of them.
1/1909 The Pentecost magazine has Ryan pic and artlcle.

3/1910 (Household of God) preached at Oakland prior to Manley

3/1910 (Household of God) in Tokyo as missionary

1910 US Census has the family living in Salem, Oregon as lodgers. But Martin Ryan is not with them. They are still married. She lists her occupation as a missionary in Tokio, Japan.

1/8/1911 (East Oregonian, Pendleton, Oregon, p. 2) Salem, Or., Jan. 7. Rowena Florence Ryan( maiden name Holden, born in Marysville, CA) began proceedings today In the circuit court for Marlon county against her. husband, Martin Lawrence Ryan, alleging as cause for the decree that Martin Lawrence, as a member of the Tongues of Fire" sect, committed her to the care of the Lord and neglected to provide for her and her five children, with the necessaries of life. She was commanded by her husband, she - alleges, to "Obey the Lord and he would provide a home for her and her children," and since he had committed her to the fear of the Lord as aforesaid, he, himself, had considered himself relieved of ail responsibility In the matter. Mrs. Ryan intimates in her complaint that either she failed to obey the Lord as commanded, or that the Lord overlooked her. Anyhow, she has been compelled to seek employment as a telephone girl to support herself and five young ones.

1/9/1911 (East Oregonian, Pendleton, Oregon, p. 6) Salem, Ore., Jan. 9. Because her husband entrusted her care and keeping "to the Lord," as alleged in the complaint, Rowena Florence Ryan has commenced suit for divorce from Martin Lawrence Ryan, a preacher at Spokane, representing the creed known as "Tongues of Fire," or "Religion of Unknown Tongues." The complaint says that she followed her husband on wanderings through many states in the Union until finally he decided to go to Japan and she, with her children, accompanied him to that country. There she states, they had little sustenance and went through trials and hardships, the whole family larder at one time consisting of a cup of rice. She claims that her trials and hardships were made the subject of publication of numerous religious journals until they became a matter of almost national notoriety.

She induced her husband to return to Oregon, she alleges, but later he Went to Spokane. She has five minor children. She alleges that although her husband is able to command a salary of $4000 a year he has provided practically nothing for the family for some time, giving all of his substance to others and stating that the Lord will provide for his wife and children.

Spokane, Jan. 9. The Rev. Martin Lawrence Ryan is in Spokane conducting a series of meetings at the Apostolic Assembly, Front avenue and Howard street. He says he has been a believer in the faith which he preaches for seven years, and is a man of many vocations. He has been a newspaper publisher, book agent, preacher, foreign missionary and wrltf-r. But he has given up all to the preaching of the Apostolic faith. and has depended on the Lord for eustainance. He said last night the Lord had provided pretty well for him, but his wife did not agree with him.

"I returned from Japan December 1 after a three years' mission In that country, going from Spokane with other missionaries, of whom City Plumbing Inspector Edward E. Riley was one, and after a few days at home my wife told me she was not satisfied and lived happier when I was away," said Mr. Ryan last night. "I shall not fight the divorce suit, for if she thinks we had better part, It would not be well for us to live together. There have been times when we did not have all we needed but I believe in this faith and shall stay by it." Mr. Ryan published the rim daily paper in Sprague, he says.

3/18/1911 (Statesman Journal, p. 5) Judge Galloway granted a decree of divorce yesterday to Rowena Florence Ryan from her husband, Martin Lawrence Ryan, whom she charged with cruelty. Alimony is allowed the plaintiff of 30 a month. Ryan was connected with the 'Tongues of Fire'' sect and is now alleged to be in Spokane, Wash.

Mr; Ryan, it is understood; claims also to have the gift of tongues now a recent acquisition, and others of the flock are seeking it, including Mrs.Ryan.

Re: Who was Harry Morse ?

2 books came in the mail this week. One is old and one is new.

The Majorie Memories, by Stanley Scism is the biography of Majorie Scism. She and her husband, Ellis Scism, were students of Harry Morse.

God in Christ Jesus, John Paterson, is from 1966 and based on older material. At 69 pages, it has substance but no references to early Oneness Pentecostals, as I had hoped.

The Paterson book is hardbound and in great shape. It will be an interesting read.

Re: Who was Harry Morse ?

Questions Pentecostals Ask Volume 2 came in the mail today. David Gray was a student of Harry Morse. One of 4 that started small Bible schools.

The second volume is just like the first. Neither make any mention of Harry Morse or any other early Pentecostal.

Vol. 2 is much harder to find than vol 1.

Now I have both.

Re: Who was Harry Morse ?

Paul Dugas wrote a biography of G.T. Haywood. Not a word is mentioned of the 1913 Arroyo Seco campmeeting.

How disappointing.

Looks like the only Oneness Pentecostals to write about that event are Frank Ewart and Harry Morse.

Did anyone else write about it ??
