They didn't, it was dealling with the Sadducee's who didn't believe in a physical Resurrection from the dead, yet were being Baptized in hopes of a physical Ressurection.

I believe "Baptism for the dead" is speaking about our need to get baptized in order to come into union with Christ at the point of His death. For the reason of HIS DEATH, we are baptized. So, FOR THE DEAD refers to the reason of Christ's death.
